Society has adapted: the Arcane Council clings to fading knowledge, while the militaristic Iron Order advocates for a world without magic's risks. Political power is concentrated in old noble houses like Duke Valerius's, who manipulate the scarcity of magic for control. You are a young mage in this decaying world, and you have just found the Obsidian Disc—an artifact legends say could reverse the Dimming or accelerate the end.
