📖 Story Backstory
The introduction and setting of the world, including its history.
Aethelgard, the last great city of a fading magical age. Centuries ago, the Sundering severed the world from pure magic, leaving behind only the corrupted Veil. The Mage Council governs magic's dwindling use, the fanatical Order of the Sun seeks to purge it entirely, and the criminal Unseen exploit its black market. The Veil, the source of all magic, now warps both spell and spellcaster, causing physical and mental decay known as Corruption. You are a newly awakened mage, your power unusually strong and strangely marked—whispers say you might be connected to the forgotten god whose silence caused the Sundering. The city teeters on the brink of war between magic-fearers and magic-users, while ancient ruins beneath the streets stir with forgotten power.
👥 Characters (9)
Characters in this story. You will choose who to play as when you start.
You
Protagonist
A novice mage with a secret. You've just discovered a forbidden grimoire in your late mentor's belongings. You possess a raw, untapped potential for magic that the Council would deem dangerous.
Elara Vane
Neutral
A former Archmage, now in self-imposed exile. She was a leading researcher before the Great Silence and knows more about its causes than anyone alive. She seeks a successor to continue her forbidden work.
Magister Thorne
Neutral
The pragmatic and ruthless head of the Arcane Council. He believes strict control is the only way to prevent another cataclysm. He knows the true, ugly history of the Silence and will bury it to maintain order.
Kaelen
Neutral
The Warden of the Silent Forest. He protects the borderlands from the forest's corrupting influence and guards its deepest secret—a unstable rift to the source of the Corruption.
Lyra
Neutral
A rogue Shadowweaver and agent of 'The Unseen Hand,' a secret society that seeks to hoard forbidden magic for their own ascent to power. She is a skilled infiltrator and information broker.
Elara Vane
Neutral
A noblewoman from a once-great magical house, now in decline. Publicly, she is a reclusive scholar. Secretly, she is a powerful Arcanist researching a way to purify the Veil. She sees your unique awakening as a potential key to her life's work, but her methods are ruthless and she believes ends justify means.
Kaelen
Neutral
A rogue and information broker for the Unseen with a natural, low-level affinity for shadow magic. He's a survivor who trusts only coin and proven actions. Hates the Order of the Sun for destroying his childhood neighborhood. Works with Elara for funding but finds her nobility grating.
Archivist Theron
Neutral
The head of the Grand Archive, the city's greatest repository of (approved) knowledge. He was Elara's secret tutor and knows more about the Sundering and the forgotten god than anyone alive. He believes some truths are too dangerous to be known and actively suppresses them, even from allies.
Captain Valerius
Neutral
Leader of Aethelgard's City Watch, caught between the law he swore to uphold and his private sympathy for mages struggling with their curse. He follows the Order's edicts publicly but quietly mitigates their worst excesses. Provides a lawful, if conflicted, path through the city's troubles.
