📖 Story Backstory
The introduction and setting of the world, including its history.
The Orion Spur is a contested frontier, caught between two ancient, reclusive alien empires: the crystalline, logic-driven Aethel, and the bio-mechanical, hive-minded K'thari. Both consider the sector their ancestral territory, but their cold war has created a power vacuum filled with human colonies, corporate interests, and ruthless pirate clans like the Ravagers. Technology is a patchwork of human innovation and scavenged alien relics. Faster-than-light travel is possible via stabilized wormhole gates, but travel beyond the mapped network is perilous. A unique phenomenon, 'Resonant Echoes,' allows powerful emotional or psychic events to leave imprints on the physical world, which can be sensed by those with latent psionic sensitivity or via specialized tech. These Echoes can reveal hidden truths, drive people mad, or be weaponized.
👥 Characters (4)
Characters in this story. You will choose who to play as when you start.
Aris Vex
Protagonist
Captain of the *Echo of the Void*. A pragmatic scavenger with a stubborn streak of idealism buried deep. Orphaned young on a frontier world, Aris worked their way up from a dock rat to a ship captain through sheer grit and a knack for finding value where others see junk. They are fiercely protective of their small crew, viewing them as the only family they have left.
Kaelen
Neutral
The ship's mysterious engineer and a refugee from the Aethel Concord. Kaelen fled their crystalline homeworld, rejecting its rigid, emotionless logic, and now hides their true nature aboard the *Echo*. They possess an intuitive, almost mystical understanding of technology, especially alien systems, but their past is a closely guarded secret.
Jax "Rust" Moretti
Neutral
The *Echo*'s pilot and tactical officer. A former Colonial Marine sergeant who was drummed out after a mission went catastrophically wrong. Jax is a cynic who has seen the worst the galaxy has to offer, but beneath the gruff exterior lies a steadfast loyalty and a protective instinct for his crewmates.
Lyra Sol
Neutral
A freelance information broker and slicer (hacker) of considerable skill. Lyra trades in secrets, black-market data, and discreet extractions. She operates from the shadows of Freehold Station, her loyalty for sale but her discretion absolute—for the right price. She has her own moral code, refusing jobs that involve outright slavery or genocide, but everything else is negotiable.
⚡ Key Events (7)
Echo in the Graveyard
The *Echo of the Void* has detected a strange signal in the Graveyard Belt. As the crew debates investigating, they are ambushed by Ravager pirates. This event introduces the core gameplay loop: exploration, risk assessment, tactical decision-making, and the first hint of the larger mystery via the anomalous signal. It ends with the immediate choice to fight or flee the Ravagers.
The Derelict's Secret
If the crew survives the initial encounter and boards the alien derelict, they find it is not entirely dead. Flickering holograms in an unknown language play on loops, and the air hums with a low-frequency vibration—a powerful Resonant Echo. Exploring the ship, they discover its core is a contained spatial anomaly, a prototype drive that could revolutionize FTL travel... or destroy a solar system. They also find evidence it was attacked not by pirates, but by one of the major alien empires.
Port of Many Faces
The crew reaches the bustling, chaotic neutral port of Freehold Station to sell their findings, repair the ship, and gather information. Here, they are approached by multiple parties: a sleek corporate agent from Neo-Terra Dynamics offering a blank check for the drive data, a hooded representative of the Aethel Concord inquiring about 'stolen property,' and a grizzled informant who warns that the K'thari Swarm has placed a bounty on anyone with knowledge of the derelict. The crew must navigate this web of intrigue, deciding who to trust and how to leverage their discovery.
The Swarm's Shadow
While transiting a supposedly empty nebula, the Echo is ambushed by a K'thari scout vessel—a living ship of chitin and bio-luminescence. The attack is not to destroy, but to capture. Telepathic probes batter the crew's minds, seeking information about the derelict. The crew must fight off both the physical assault and the psychic intrusion, with Kaelen's resonance damper being pushed to its limits.
A Debt Called In
At a remote fueling outpost, Aris is cornered by Silas Rourke, a former associate from their Terminus days. Silas, now a mid-level fixer for the Ravagers, claims Aris owes him for a past favor—a debt to be paid by handing over the coordinates to the alien derelict. He has brought muscle, and the outpost's corrupt administrator looks the other way.
Echoes of Betrayal
Investigating a derelict Colonial Administration outpost, the crew discovers it was not abandoned but purged. The place is saturated with a violent, confusing Resonant Echo—a memory of panic and betrayal. As they piece together logs, they learn the outpost was researching forbidden K'thari bio-weapons, and was shut down by an Aethel clean-up team. The Echo is so strong it begins to overlay past events onto the present, creating phantom soldiers and screams.
The Concord's Inquiry
A sleek, unmarked Aethel shuttle intercepts the Echo near a gate, requesting—not demanding—a parley. Aboard, an Aethel Emissary, crystalline and serene, questions Kaelen directly about the derelict's drive technology. They claim it is a dangerous relic of a lost Aethel splinter faction, and its recovery is a matter of galactic stability. They offer a substantial reward and safe passage in exchange for the data and Kaelen's 'voluntary' return for debriefing.
