📖 Story Backstory
The introduction and setting of the world, including its history.
Decades after the 'Collapse'—a cataclysm of unknown origin that shattered global infrastructure and introduced the 'Glitch'—humanity clings to life in fortified enclaves and lawless ruins. The Glitch is a spatial-temporal anomaly causing localized reality failures: time loops, gravity wells, phantom sounds, and memory erosion. The city of New Haven, built within and atop a ruined megacity, is the primary setting. It is ruled by the austere 'Preservation Council' from the central Spire, while various factions—scavenger guilds, tech cultists, and rogue 'Glitch-touched' individuals—vie for power and resources in the lower districts. Old-world technology is both coveted and feared, as it often interacts unpredictably with the Glitch. The 'Resonance Principle' is a fragment of pre-Collapse science suggesting certain frequencies can harmonize or disrupt the Glitch. The Beacon is a Resonance Generator, a device thought lost.
👥 Characters (4)
Characters in this story. You will choose who to play as when you start.
Kael
Protagonist
A veteran scavenger of the Rust Quarter, Kael is pragmatic, cynical, and survivalist to his core. He operates alone, trusting few and owing fewer. His primary motivation is simple: secure enough resources to eventually buy passage to a rumored 'stable zone' far from New Haven. He harbors a deep-seated guilt over a past partner who was lost to a severe Glitch event, a memory he avoids. Kael is adept at jury-rigging tech and navigating hazardous ruins.
Vera
Neutral
A high-ranking Archivist for the Preservation Council, Vera is a true believer in order, knowledge, and controlled progress. She sees the Glitch as a cosmological disease to be studied and, one day, cured. She is methodical, patient, and fiercely protective of pre-Collapse artifacts, believing they hold the key to salvation. Her secret: she knows more about the true cause of the Collapse than she admits, and she believes the Beacon is a critical component of a larger, dangerous plan once pursued by her predecessors.
Jax
Neutral
A 'Glitch-touched' tech-adept and information smuggler, Jax thrives in the anarchic underbelly of New Haven. The Glitch affected him during childhood, leaving him with a minor, permanent psychic link to the anomaly. He can sense Glitch fluctuations and, with focus, disrupt simple electronics. He is charismatic, reckless, and morally flexible, running deals for anyone who pays. His secret: he is being hunted by the Cult of the True Code, who believe his condition is a sign of 'impurity' that must be cleansed.
Brin
Neutral
The de facto leader of the Rustwalkers Guild in the Rust Quarter, Brin is a pragmatist who values the Guild's survival above all else. He is fiercely loyal to his scavengers, viewing them as a family, but is utterly ruthless to outsiders who threaten Guild interests. He sees the Beacon not as a world-changing artifact, but as a potentially invaluable tool for reclaiming lost salvage from high-risk Glitch zones. His secret: he knows the location of a pre-Collapse military cache, but it's buried deep in a permanent, violent Glitch storm he calls 'The Maw.' He believes the Beacon might be the key to reaching it.
⚡ Key Events (8)
The Hum in the Ruins
The discovery of the Beacon in the Rust Quarter immediately draws attention. The player must decide how to handle the approaching stranger (Vera). This scene establishes the tone, introduces the Glitch through environmental details, and presents the first major choice: trust, deception, or flight. It ends with the player gaining a new objective: either to deliver the Beacon to the Council, to hide it, or to seek an independent appraisal.
Deal in the Dark
Following the discovery, the player needs to navigate the black market of the 'Low Sector' to either sell information, find a buyer for the Beacon, or acquire tools to study it. This event introduces Jax as a fixer and exposes the player to the factional tensions of the city. A deal is arranged in a leaking underground concourse, but it may be a trap set by the Cult of the True Code or rival scavengers.
Echoes in the Spire
If the player engages with Vera or the Council, they are granted an audience at the Preservation Spire. This event reveals more about the world's history and the Resonance Project. Vera shows the player archived logs hinting at the Beacon's purpose and the catastrophic failure that may have caused the Collapse. The player must decide how much to reveal about their own findings and whether to formally ally with the Council.
The Glitch-Tide
A major Glitch surge sweeps through the Rust Quarter and adjacent districts, causing widespread reality failures. Time stutters, gravity inverts in patches, and phantom figures from the past manifest. The player must navigate this unstable zone to reach relative safety, potentially rescuing others or salvaging valuable tech exposed by the distortion. The Beacon hums in response to the surge, suggesting it could be used to calm the anomaly—at a personal cost.
Cult of the True Code
The player encounters zealots of the Cult of the True Code, who believe the Glitch is a divine purge and that old-world tech is blasphemy. They are hunting 'impure' individuals and artifacts—including the Beacon. The player must evade or confront them in the derelict 'Circuit Cathedral,' a former server farm now serving as their sanctum.
The Rustwalkers' Gambit
The Rustwalkers Guild, having heard rumors of the player's find, makes an offer: they provide protection and resources in exchange for the player using the Beacon to clear a notoriously Glitch-ridden salvage depot, 'The Graveyard.' This is a test of the device's utility and the player's loyalty to the scavenger community.
Vera's Ultimatum
Vera confronts the player, having pieced together their activities. She presents evidence that the Beacon is part of a network, and that activating it alone is drawing dangerous attention from something buried deep in the ruins—a 'Resonance Echo' of the Collapse itself. She demands the device be handed over to the Council for secure study, offering a final chance at a generous reward... or consequences.
Jax's Sanctuary
Jax, if he trusts the player, reveals his hidden safehouse—a Glitch-stable pocket dimension he discovered, accessible only through a specific anomaly. He proposes using it as a base to study the Beacon away from prying eyes. However, maintaining the sanctuary's stability requires a constant trickle of power, and the Beacon's presence begins to cause strange, beautiful mutations within the pocket space.
