📖 Story Backstory
The introduction and setting of the world, including its history.
The world of Aethel is a tapestry woven from the light of the First Artifacts, created in a forgotten age. The Sunstone of Luminar is the last of the great 'Beacon' artifacts, its light sustaining the central continent and repelling the Umbral Tide—a formless, consuming darkness that exists beyond the edges of the map. Other artifacts exist (Moon-veined weapons, Star-charts, etc.) but are lesser, derivative, and fading faster. Society is stratified between the Artificers (who study and maintain relics), the military Orders (who seek to control them), and the common folk who live in the shrinking light. The Grand Archive of Luminar is the last repository of knowledge about the Artifacts. The unique lore rule: 'The Law of Diminishing Echo.' Magic cannot be created anew; it can only be channeled from an artifact, and each use causes a permanent, minute drain. A powerful enough use can shatter an artifact entirely, unleashing its stored energy in a catastrophic, one-time burst.
👥 Characters (4)
Characters in this story. You will choose who to play as when you start.
Aris
Protagonist
Aris is a senior chronicler of the Grand Archive, trained from youth to observe, record, and never interfere. They possess a brilliant, analytical mind but struggle with decisive action, preferring to weigh every outcome. Their deepest motivation is not to save the world in a heroic sense, but to preserve its story—to ensure that if the light fails, at least the memory of what was lost is not consumed by the dark.
Kaelen
Neutral
Captain of the Order of the Dawn's Vanguard. Kaelen is a true believer in the Order's mission: to secure all artifacts by any means necessary to create fortified 'Last Lights' for humanity's survival. He sees scholars as naive custodians of power they refuse to use. His flaw is a rigid, tactical mindset that cannot comprehend sacrifice for intangible ideals like knowledge or freedom.
Elara
Neutral
The High Archivist Emeritus, Aris's mentor. Elara is the foremost living expert on artifact decay. Publicly, she is a frail, retired scholar. In truth, she is the secret leader of the 'Echoes,' a network of artificers who believe the only way to save magic is to shatter the great artifacts in a controlled manner, releasing their energy back into the world in a desperate attempt to 're-weave' the fading laws of magic—a heretical and incredibly dangerous belief.
Sylas
Neutral
A 'Star-Crosser,' one of the few who dare to travel the unmapped edges where the Umbral Tide is strongest. He is not aligned with any major faction. He believes the true answer to the fading lies not in the great artifacts, but in the 'Between-Lights'—the faint, natural luminous phenomena that exist even in the deepest dark, which he studies with his unique, non-magical instruments. He sees both the Order and the Echoes as doomed, arrogant for trying to control what they don't understand.
⚡ Key Events (8)
The Dimming of the Stone
The prologue scene. Aris is in the Archive with the fading Sunstone. The High Archivist announces the decay. The Order of the Dawn arrives outside, demanding the artifact. Elara, the mentor, whispers of a secret escape. Aris must make the first critical choice: surrender to the Order, flee with Elara, or attempt to hide the Stone within the vast, labyrinthine Archive.
Paths Diverged
The consequences of the first choice unfold. If Aris surrendered, they are now in a guarded wagon headed for the Order's fortress, 'Last Light,' and must negotiate their role. If they fled, they are in the damp canals beneath the city with Elara, who begins to reveal fragments of her true plan. If they hid successfully, they are alone in the sealed-off lower archives with the Stone, and must use their wits to survive and plan their next move as both the Order and the Echoes search for them.
The Price of Light
All paths converge at the 'Shardfall,' a blighted region where a great artifact shattered centuries ago. The Umbral Tide is strong here. Kaelen's forces arrive to secure a rumored 'Heart-Shard' that could amplify the Sunstone. Elara's Echoes arrive to use the site's unstable resonance for their ritual. Aris, regardless of path, arrives with their own goal: to document the truth, secure the shard, or stop the ritual. A three-way standoff ensues amidst the psychic echoes of the ancient catastrophe.
Whispers in the Dark
Following the events at Shardfall, Aris receives a clandestine message from a member of the 'Echoes' network who has grown disillusioned with Elara's extremism. This informant offers to meet in the crumbling 'Whisper Gallery'—an ancient amphitheater where sound carries strangely—to reveal the full, horrifying cost of the Re-weaving ritual. However, the meeting is a trap set by a rival faction within the Echoes who want to eliminate dissenters.
The Forge of Memories
To progress any path—whether to repair, destroy, or understand the Sunstone—Aris must venture to the 'Forge of Memories,' a hidden workshop built into a dormant volcano where the First Artifacts were supposedly shaped. The forge is not a physical smithy but a metaphysical space where intense heat and pressure can temporarily stabilize a decaying artifact... or accelerate its demise. The forge is guarded by 'Forgelings,' semi-sentient constructs of stone and residual creation-energy.
Council of the Fading
The leaders of the remaining minor artifact-holding factions—the Starlit Cartographers, the Moonvein Smiths, and the Silent Keepers—call a secret council in a neutral, warded location. Their artifacts are failing rapidly, and they are desperate. They debate three courses: pooling their relics to create a new, smaller beacon; surrendering them all to the Order of the Dawn; or joining Elara's ritual en masse. Aris's reputation and diplomatic skills are critical to influencing this fragile alliance.
The Tide's Hunger
The Umbral Tide, sensing the weakening of the world's light, launches its first major, coordinated incursion into a populated area—the farming town of Eventide, which lies just outside the Sunstone's current effective radius. Shadows become physical, draining light, warmth, and memories from the townsfolk. Aris arrives either with Kaelen's troops (if allied), with Echoes saboteurs (if allied), or alone. The goal is not just to repel the Tide, but to witness and document its true nature.
The Last Page
The final convergence. All paths lead to the 'Cradle of Luminar,' the original resting place of the Sunstone, now a desolate basin at the world's heart. The Stone is at its absolute weakest. Kaelen's forces are dug in for a final stand. Elara and her Echoes have prepared the Re-weaving ritual. The minor factions watch from the sidelines. Aris, bearing the accumulated knowledge, alliances, and betrayals of their journey, must make the ultimate choice: how to write the final page of the Sunstone's story.
