📖 Story Backstory
The introduction and setting of the world, including its history.
The city of Aethelburg is a sprawling metropolis built on a foundation of old money and new sins. Decades ago, a strange mineral was discovered in the riverbeds, leading to a boom in industry and a parallel underground economy in 'Reminiscence'—a psychoactive substance that can surface and transfer memory impressions. The official line is that it's a dangerous narcotic; the reality is that the city's elite use it as a tool for espionage and blackmail, while the desperate sell their own pasts for cash. The police are corrupt, the politicians are bought, and truth is a commodity few can afford. Your character is a former beat cop turned private investigator, cast out for asking the wrong questions.

The Detective (Protagonist)
Protagonist
A former police detective who was pushed out for digging too deep into a case involving the city's elite. Now operates as a private investigator, taking jobs that walk the line between the legal and the necessary. Cynical but not entirely without hope, driven by a need to find some semblance of truth in a city built on lies.
Mira Vance
Neutral
The daughter of the missing Elias Vance, a respected historian and rumored chronicler of the city's secret history. Publicly, she runs a rare bookstore and acts the grieving heiress. Privately, she is desperate, fearing her father is dead and that his research—contained in the ledger—will ignite a war in the underworld. She may know more about Reminiscence than she lets on.
Lysander Croft
Neutral
A charismatic and ruthless nightclub owner and unofficial power broker in Aethelburg's underworld. He controls several distribution channels for low-grade Reminiscence. He knew Elias Vance and has a vested interest in the ledger's contents—not for blackmail, but for the historical trade routes it might reveal, which could expand his empire.
Sergeant Finn O'Malley
Neutral
A veteran sergeant in the Aethelburg Police Department, and the detective's former partner. He was the one who reluctantly delivered the news of the detective's forced resignation. Publicly, he toes the department line. Privately, he's a man drowning in guilt and cheap whiskey, holding onto a few pieces of evidence from the 'Silvergate' case that could clear the detective's name—if he ever finds the courage to use them.
⚡ Key Events (8)
A Whisper in the Rain
The opening scene. After the threat in the alley, the detective must decide how to proceed. Option A: Confront the thug, leading to a scuffle that yields a clue—a matchbook from The Gilded Cage. Option B: Walk away calmly, tailing the thug back to a nondescript warehouse on the docks, witnessing a meeting between low-level crooks. Either path provides the first real lead and sets the tone for the investigation. The scene ends with the detective returning to the office to find a handwritten note slipped under the door: 'Meet me at The Scriptorium. -M.V.'
The Scriptorium
The Scriptorium is Mira Vance's rare bookstore, a front for her real work. The meeting is tense. Mira denies hiring the detective but confirms the ledger's importance and her father's disappearance. She reveals the ledger contains coded references to 'The Benefactors'—a shadowy consortium that has controlled the Reminiscence trade since its discovery. She can provide a decryption key, but only if the detective retrieves a sample of her father's handwriting from his abandoned study, which is under police watch. The player must decide whether to trust Mira's story and undertake the risky burglary.
An Offer at The Gilded Cage
Following the matchbook clue or rumors on the street, the detective is summoned to Lysander Croft's opulent nightclub. Lysander, in his private booth, offers a deal: he will provide the name of the thug from the alley and the location of a Reminiscence den where Elias was last seen, in exchange for a copy of whatever the detective finds in the ledger about 'shipping routes'. He implies the police are compromised and that Mira is not telling the whole truth. The player must navigate this conversation, choosing to accept, refuse, or bluff.
A Favor at The Rusty Nail
A tip or a memory leads the detective to The Rusty Nail, the dive bar where his old partner Finn O'Malley drinks away his guilt. The reunion is tense. O'Malley is initially hostile, blaming the detective for making him complicit. But after a few drinks (or a well-placed appeal to his conscience), he reveals that Elias Vance's disappearance wasn't logged as a missing persons case—it was quietly classified as 'cleared, no further action' by orders from high up. He can get the detective into the evidence locker to see the Vance file, but it's a huge risk for them both.
The Evidence Locker
With O'Malley's help (or through a solo, risky break-in), the detective infiltrates the precinct's evidence locker. The official file on Elias Vance is a ghost—just a cover sheet. But hidden behind a false panel in O'Malley's old locker is the real file: photos of Vance's ransacked study (more thorough than Mira described), a report linking him to 'unauthorized historical research,' and a single, damning evidence bag containing a vial of ultra-pure Reminiscence, labeled as being from Vance's person. The purity is military or corporate grade, not street level.
Echoes in the Den
Following Lysander's tip or another lead, the detective visits the Reminiscence den, 'The Echo Chamber,' a squalid apartment in the riverfront district. The current owner, a twitchy addict named Candle, claims Elias Vance was a occasional customer, but not for the low-grade stuff—he came to sell memories. Specifically, memories of 'old buildings and river maps.' If the detective uses a dose of Rem (from their inventory or purchased here), they can experience a fragmented echo of Vance's last visit: a feeling of fear, the smell of chemical lavender (Lysander's scent), and the image of a ledger page being torn out.
The Benefactor's Mask
Decrypting a page from the ledger (with Mira's help) reveals not a name, but a location: the abandoned Aethelburg Foundry, a shell corporation owned by a consortium called 'Aethel Holdings.' Infiltrating the foundry, the detective finds it's not abandoned at all, but a clandestine lab for refining high-grade Reminiscence. Security is tight. The detective witnesses a meeting between a polished corporate executive and a high-ranking police official. They discuss 'the Vance problem' and 'asset liquidation.' The detective can choose to intervene, gather photographic evidence, or retreat to report to Mira or Lysander.
A Choice of Masters
The walls close in. Mira, armed with the detective's findings, wants to go public with the story, using her contacts at a newspaper. Lysander offers a counter-proposal: give him the ledger and the evidence, and he will use it to dismantle 'Aethel Holdings' from within, installing himself as the new power—promising the detective a cut and a clean slate. O'Malley, terrified, begs the detective to drop everything and run. The player must make a definitive choice that will determine the finale: side with Mira's idealism, Lysander's ruthless pragmatism, or abandon the city to its fate.
