📖 Story Backstory
The introduction and setting of the world, including its history.
The Kingdom of Veridia is a land of gilded falsehoods. A century ago, the benevolent Sun King Alistair vanished, and the Court of Whispers rose to power, establishing a rule built on curated truths and convenient lies. They enforce the 'Grand Narrative,' a state-sanctioned story that paints them as saviors. In reality, they orchestrated the king's downfall and now siphon the land's latent magic—the 'Veridian Glimmer'—to sustain their illusions and power. The land suffers: crops are stunted, magical creatures grow bitter and twisted, and the ever-present thorns choke the wild places. A secret society, the 'Unbound,' seeks to restore truth, but they are hunted. The player is an apprentice historian who stumbles upon the first crack in the kingdom's perfect facade.

Elara
Protagonist
An apprentice archivist with a dangerous curiosity. Orphaned young, she found solace in books and a mentor in the old Head Archivist, who vanished a year ago. She believes the official stories are incomplete and hunts for discrepancies, driven by a need to understand her own fragmented past and the fate of her mentor.
Kaelen
Neutral
A member of the Unbound, the secret society fighting the Court of Whispers. He is a 'Thorn-Cutter,' specializing in navigating and clearing areas overgrown by lies. Cynical and wounded, he has lost friends to the Court's purges and trusts no one outside the Unbound. He sees Elara as a potential asset or a liability, but her discovery forces him to intervene.
Archivist Silas
Neutral
The current Head Archivist, appointed by the Court of Whispers after his predecessor's disappearance. He is the public face of curated history, a meticulous guardian of the Grand Narrative. Yet, there is a profound sadness and tension in him, suggesting he knows more than he says and is trapped by his position.
Bryn
Neutral
The de facto leader of the Unbound cell in the capital's Warrens. She runs The Mended Quill tavern as a front. A former playwright whose satirical works were deemed 'subversive narratives,' she was tortured and left for dead in a thorn-choked alley. The Unbound found her. She is fiercely protective of her people, brutally pragmatic, and possesses a playwright's understanding of how stories can be weaponized.
⚡ Key Events (8)
The Thorn in the Scroll
Elara discovers the forbidden scroll in the Royal Archives, learning of King Alistair's murder. A physical thorn sprouts from the parchment, proving the Law of Thorns. Archivist Silas approaches, forcing an immediate choice: hide the evidence or stand her ground. This event introduces the core conflict, the magical system, and the first major decision point.
Escape from Gilded Spire
With Kaelen's help, Elara flees the Archives. They must navigate the festival-choked streets of the capital, avoiding the City Watch and the first manifestations of thorns created by the Court's celebratory lies. They seek refuge in the Warrens, the city's underworld, to meet a contact from the Unbound.
The Unbound Safehouse
Elara is brought to a hidden safehouse in the Warrens, a tavern called The Mended Quill. She meets the local Unbound cell leader, a sharp-tongued woman named Bryn, and is given her first real mission: retrieve a 'Truth-Teller's Lens' from the Sunken King's crypt, a location said to be guarded by the thorns of the original lie.
The Whispering Woods
The journey to the Sunken King's crypt leads through the Whispering Woods, a forest choked with the oldest, most malevolent thorns—the physical remnants of the Court's foundational lies. The woods themselves seem to murmur with half-heard falsehoods, and the path is not just physical but a test of perception and truth.
Crypt of the Sunken King
The entrance to the crypt is a maw of stone and thorns, hidden beneath a petrified oak. Inside, the air is cold and heavy with the weight of the kingdom's first great lie. The Truth-Teller's Lens is said to be in the inner sanctum, but the crypt is guarded not by monsters, but by 'Eidolons of False Memory'—spectral guardians formed from the conflicting stories about Alistair's death.
The Court's Response
Retrieving the Lens triggers a magical backlash sensed by the Court of Whispers. A detachment of 'Glimmerguards,' enforcers who wield illusions as weapons, is dispatched to the Whispering Woods. Elara and Kaelen must escape the forest with their prize, now actively hunted.
A Traitor's Gambit
Back at The Mended Quill, celebration is cut short. Someone within the Warrens has tipped off the City Watch. The safehouse is surrounded. Bryn suspects a new, nervous recruit, but the truth is more complicated—the traitor is being blackmailed with a loved one's safety, a classic tactic of the Court.
The Gilded Masquerade
To access a vault containing Alistair's lost crown, the party must infiltrate the climax of the Glimmer Festival: the Gilded Masquerade in the palace. It is a den of lies, where every compliment is a bargaining chip and every mask hides a secret. Elara must navigate the ballroom, using the Truth-Teller's Lens to identify key conspirators and learn the vault's location, all while maintaining her own disguise.
