📖 Story Backstory
The introduction and setting of the world, including its history.
The Aethelgard Research Station, buried deep within a remote mountain range, was publicly a center for neurological studies. Privately, it housed the 'Echo Project,' an experiment to record, store, and potentially transfer human consciousness. The project succeeded in creating 'Echoes'—residual psychic imprints of strong emotions and memories that have seeped into the facility's very structure. These Echoes warp perception and reality for those with prolonged exposure. The project was shut down after a catastrophic incident one month ago, which caused most of the staff to evacuate or vanish. A skeleton crew remains, each dealing with the aftermath in their own way, and each hiding something. The facility itself is now a living memory palace, its layout and rules subject to the dominant Echoes present.
👥 Characters (4)
Characters in this story. You will choose who to play as when you start.
Dr. Aris Thorne
Protagonist
A cognitive technician specializing in memory mapping. Took the Aethelgard contract to escape professional disgrace and mounting debt. Pragmatic and observant, but carries a deep-seated guilt over a past ethical lapse in their research. They are here to do a job and get out, but the station has other plans.
Kaelen Vance
The acting head of station security, and one of the few who never evacuated. He is obsessed with maintaining 'order' and 'containment' within the facility, though his methods are increasingly erratic. He knows more about the Echo incident than anyone, and is terrified of it repeating.
Elara Silv
A systems engineer and the station's de facto caretaker since the evacuation. She claims to have been in a shielded maintenance duct during the incident, unaffected. Elara is strangely acclimated to the shifting facility, navigating it with an uncanny ease that unsettles others. She speaks to the machines like they are alive.
Dr. Soren Vex
The former lead biochemist for the Echo Project, specializing in the neuro-chemical cocktails used to stabilize subjects during consciousness transfer. Officially, he evacuated a month ago. In reality, he never left. He has been living in the abandoned Hydroponics and Biochemistry Lab, surviving on synthesized nutrients and his own dwindling supply of experimental drugs. He is a ghost in the system, and his mind is a fractured archive of the project's most dangerous secrets.
⚡ Key Events (7)
The Silent Welcome
Aris arrives in the Central Monitoring Hub. The choice to approach the silent technician (an Echo-manifestation) or answer the intercom (Kaelen) determines their first impression of the station's reality. The silent technician, if approached, fades into static, leaving behind a corrupted data pad with a single clear line: 'DON'T TRUST YOUR EYES.' Kaelen's intercom instructions are brusque and lead to a seemingly normal, yet eerily empty, administrative wing.
The Whispering Ducts
Aris's first assigned task—to check environmental controls in the lower ducts—forces them into close quarters with the station's infrastructure. Here, Elara finds them. She offers guidance, showing a hidden shortcut, but the path is saturated with a 'Claustrophobia' Echo. The ducts seem to shrink, distant sobbing can be heard, and Aris must manage their own panic while deciding how much to trust this strange engineer.
Kaelen's Audit
Kaelen summons Aris for a 'performance review' in the secure Security Nexus. The room is cold and sterile, a deliberate contrast to the rest of the station. Kaelen questions Aris's activities, particularly any time spent with Elara. He presents a security log fragment that seems to show Aris accessing a restricted file—a file Aris has no memory of accessing. Is it a frame-up, a system glitch, or a false memory implanted by an Echo?
The Crying in Sector Gamma
While in Habitation Sector Gamma, Aris hears the distinct sound of weeping coming from a supposedly empty room. Investigating reveals no one, but the room is frozen at the moment of its occupant's despair—a half-packed suitcase, a shattered photo. Interacting with the objects strengthens the 'Loneliness' Echo, which may temporarily manifest as a harmless, sobbing phantom that follows Aris, affecting interactions with others.
The Flickering Man
A recurring hallucination. A figure that appears at the end of corridors or reflected in windows, always just out of focus, flickering like a damaged video feed. It never approaches, only watches. Encountering it is a pure test of Sanity. As the game progresses and Sanity drops, the Flickering Man appears more frequently and in more secure locations, eventually appearing in the Security Nexus itself.
Elara's Offering
Elara approaches Aris with a proposal. She has found a 'quiet' Echo, a memory of pure scientific curiosity from the project's early days. She believes if Aris uses their cognitive training to 'interface' with it using modified station equipment, they could extract pure data about the Echo Project's goals without the emotional corruption. The procedure is risky and will take place in the unstable Neurological Research Wing.
The Resonance Cascade
A sudden, violent surge of psychic energy ripples through the station, triggered by Aris's growing insight or a specific action. Lights strobe, walls bleed static, and multiple Echoes manifest simultaneously, overlapping and conflicting. Corridors rearrange in real-time, trapping Aris in a shifting maze of fractured memories. They must navigate this psychic storm by identifying and following the 'frequency' of a single, stable emotion to find a safe harbor before their mind shatters.
