📖 Story Backstory
The introduction and setting of the world, including its history.
A century ago, the glorious Aethelgard Empire was shattered in an event known as The Sundering. Official history, enforced by the ruling Conclave of Dawn, claims it was a magical cataclysm caused by reckless sorcerers. Magic, once flowing like rivers, now exists only as fading 'Echoes'—resonant imprints left on places and objects by intense emotion or powerful events. Few can perceive these Echoes. The Conclave maintains order from the gleaming spires of Dawnspire, while the rest of the continent, like the rain-slicked city of Lighthaven or the haunted Whisperwood, struggles in a slow decline. The truth of The Sundering is a carefully guarded lie, and those who seek it disappear.
👥 Characters (4)
Characters in this story. You will choose who to play as when you start.
Elara
Protagonist
A disgraced Archivist of the Celestial Scriptorium, Elara was cast out for positing a heretical theory: that The Sundering was not an accident, but an act of deliberate sabotage. She is driven by an obsessive need to prove her theory correct and restore her name, but her pursuit is tempered by a deep-seated fear of the Conclave's power.
Kaelen
Neutral
A former Sentinel of the Veil—an elite guardian who patrolled the borders where reality thins—Kaelen was the sole survivor of his unit after a mysterious 'incident' in the Whisperwood. He is now cursed with the 'Wraith-Sight', forced to see the ghostly echoes of the dead, which constantly whisper to him.
Magister Valerius
Neutral
A high-ranking Magister of the Conclave of Dawn, Valerius is the chief enforcer of orthodoxy in Lighthaven. He is a master political operator, genuinely believing the lie of The Sundering is necessary for societal stability. He sees heresy not as evil, but as a dangerous chaos to be pruned.
Lyra
Neutral
A freelance 'Echo-Runner', Lyra navigates the dangerous waterways and forgotten paths between settlements, carrying messages and contraband that the Conclave would suppress. She trades in secrets as much as goods, and has built a network of informants among the disenfranchised. Pragmatic to a fault, she believes survival is the only true ideology in a broken world.
⚡ Key Events (8)
The Whisper at the Door
The prologue scene. Kaelen arrives at Elara's study with the news of the Sentinel's death and the mysterious obsidian shard. He presents her with a choice: flee Lighthaven with him now to investigate the Whisperwood, or stay behind to conduct safer, slower research, risking Conclave intervention. This decision sets the immediate pace and risk level of the investigation.
Echoes in the Whisperwood
If the player chose to go, this event occurs upon reaching the forest's edge. If they stayed, it triggers after a period of research when Suspicion reaches a threshold. The Whisperwood is a place of profound, tangled Echoes. Here, Elara and Kaelen must navigate both the physical dangers of the corrupted woods and the psychic onslaught of its memories. They will find the site of the Sentinel incident and experience a powerful, traumatic Echo-vision revealing the moment of the attack—not by a beast, but by a figure wielding Conclave-sanctioned magic.
The Magister's Invitation
After the Whisperwood, whether the party escaped or was spotted, Magister Valerius makes his move. Elara receives a formal, gilded invitation to a 'private discourse' at the Conclave's local chapterhouse. It is phrased as a courtesy but is unmistakably a summons. Refusing would be an open act of defiance. Attending is a walk into the lion's den.
The Gutter Market
Following a lead from the Whisperwood vision or Valerius's hints, Elara and Kaelen must venture into the Gutter Market—a clandestine bazaar that moves nightly through Lighthaven's sewers and ruined basements. Here, Echo-artefacts, forbidden texts, and information are traded away from the Conclave's light. They seek a specific broker who deals in 'Sundering-era ephemera'.
The Shattered Bell of Dawnspire
The broker provides a location: the ruins of a pre-Sundering bell tower on the outskirts of Lighthaven. The great bell, cast with celestial silver, was said to ring only for truths. It was shattered during The Sundering. Its largest fragment is rumored to hold a powerful, clarifying Echo—a memory of the moment the world broke.
A Quieting Ordered
The Conclave's patience snaps. Whether due to high Suspicion, the bell tower surge, or direct provocation, Magister Valerius signs a writ for Elara's 'Quieting'. A specialized unit of Conclave Enforcers—silent men and women in grey robes—is dispatched to find and neutralize her Echo-Sight permanently.
Kaelen's Breaking Point
The cumulative stress of his curse, the ghosts of his comrades, and the constant danger pushes Kaelen to his limit. In a moment of crisis—perhaps during an Enforcer attack or a particularly violent Echo-vision—the amber light in his eyes flares uncontrollably. He becomes a temporary liability, either freezing in pain, lashing out blindly, or becoming catatonic, overwhelmed by the whispers.
The Archive of Whispers
The final clue points not to a place, but to a person: the last living scribe who worked in the Imperial Archives before The Sundering, now hidden in a forgotten sanctuary. Reaching them requires a perilous journey through the 'Mistveil', a region where geography is unstable and Echoes have bled into reality, creating looping paths and phantom landscapes.
