📖 Story Backstory
The introduction and setting of the world, including its history.
The city of Aethelburg is a creature of contradictions: gleaming art deco spires pierce the smog, while the river docks fester with crime. It's a place where old money and new corruption dance a deadly tango. The police are either bought or broken. The unique lore of this world is 'The Echo'—a psychic imprint left by moments of intense emotion, violence, or death. Most people are oblivious, but a rare few, like the protagonist, possess a low-level sensitivity, experiencing these imprints as ghostly whispers, sudden chills, or phantom scents. It's an unreliable, haunting tool, not a superpower.
👥 Characters (4)
Characters in this story. You will choose who to play as when you start.
Silas Caine
Protagonist
A former beat cop who quit the force after seeing too much corruption covered up. Now a licensed private investigator operating on the fringe of respectability. He's good at finding truths people want hidden, but the work has left him cynical and haunted. He drinks too much black coffee and cheap whiskey, and his office is above a struggling jazz club.
Elara Vance
The surviving sister of the deceased Evelyn Vance. The public sees the perfect heiress, dutiful and grieving. In private, she is the de facto operator of the Vance family's business interests, far sharper and more ruthless than her father realizes. She knows all the skeletons in the family closet and has buried a few herself.
Inspector Marcus Thorne
A veteran detective with the Aethelburg PD, deeply entangled in the city's corruption. He and Silas have a fraught history from Silas's time on the force. Thorne knows where all the bodies are buried because he helped bury some of them. He views Silas as a loose cannon and a moralistic nuisance.
Mouthpiece Malone
A low-level enforcer and information broker for the Dock Street Syndicate. Not a kingpin, but a reliable messenger and lookout who hears things. He knew Evelyn Vance from her secret visits to the jazz clubs and gambling dens. He's terrified of both the syndicate and the police, making him a skittish but potentially valuable source.
⚡ Key Events (7)
The Client & The Echo
Silas meets his client, Alistair Vance, in a plush, silent office high above the city. The old man's grief is real, but so is his fury. He hands over a retainer and a key to Evelyn's penthouse. Later, at the rain-slicked crime scene, Silas's first brush with The Echo occurs: a phantom scent of jasmine perfume (Evelyn's signature) and the faint, discordant sound of a breaking glass. The official police seal on the door is broken. Someone has been here recently.
Shadows in the Jazz Club
Following a lead from a dockworker informant, Silas descends into 'The Midnight Note,' a basement jazz club where the city's underworld mingles. The air is thick with smoke and the sound of a mournful saxophone. Here, he must find a low-level enforcer named 'Mouthpiece' who might know about Evelyn's secret life. Inspector Thorne is also present, watching from a shadowy booth.
The Sister's Gambit
Elara Vance summons Silas to the family conservatory, a glass palace filled with silent, exotic plants. She offers a deal: drop the investigation into certain 'personal matters' concerning Evelyn, and she will double her father's fee. She presents a seemingly innocent diary page that implicates a rival family. It's a test of Silas's integrity and a possible trap.
The Ledger & The Lie
Mouthpiece, if persuaded, hands over a small, water-stained ledger. It lists coded deliveries to a warehouse on Pier 7, with Evelyn's initials next to several entries. Investigating the warehouse reveals it's a front for smuggling, not the fine art the Vances claim to import. The place is deserted but shows signs of a recent, hurried cleanup. An Echo here is strong: the acrid smell of fear and the sound of a woman's muffled sob.
A Ghost in the Archives
Researching Evelyn's known associates at the city archives or newspaper morgue turns up a society page photo from six months prior. She's smiling beside a handsome, unfamiliar man labeled only as 'a family friend from out of town.' The face is blurred, but the name was deliberately scratched from the microfiche. A helpful, elderly archivist remembers the man—he asked a lot of questions about city zoning laws and waterfront property.
Pressure from the Press
A cynical crime reporter named Rita Finch corners Silas at his office or a diner. She's been digging into the Vance story on her own and believes the suicide is a cover-up. She offers a trade: her information on Evelyn's secret psychiatric visits for whatever Silas has on the smuggling angle. Dealing with the press is dangerous—it could blow the case wide open or bring down lethal retaliation from powerful people.
The Smiling Man
The mystery man from the photo makes contact. He arranges a meeting at an upscale, nearly empty hotel bar. He's charming, impeccably dressed, and claims to be a business associate of Evelyn's who shared her 'vision' for the city's development. He subtly threatens Silas, offering a large bribe to look the other way, while also revealing that Evelyn was planning to expose certain family dealings. He is the embodiment of the new corruption—polished, ruthless, and legal-adjacent.
