📖 Story Backstory
The introduction and setting of the world, including its history.
The once-glorious Kaelos Empire has collapsed into a fractured dystopia. Mega-corporations like the Iron Syndicate and the Helios Conglomerate now rule through economic and military might, exploiting the ruins of the old empire. Between them exist independent stations, smuggling rings, and the nascent 'Echo' rebellion, which seeks to overthrow corporate control. A mysterious event known as 'The Silence' plagues the galaxy: random, localized failures of FTL drives and subspace comms, creating pockets of absolute isolation. Many believe it's a weapon left by the vanished precursor race, the Architects. The player is Kael, a pilot with a tarnished record, flying a salvaged ship through this dangerous landscape, just trying to survive and maybe find a sliver of redemption.
👥 Characters (4)
Characters in this story. You will choose who to play as when you start.
Kael
Protagonist
Once a promising navigator for a mid-tier trade guild, Kael was framed for the loss of a valuable cargo and blacklisted. Now he pilots the *Wandering Moth*, a ship he built from scrap, taking risky salvage jobs to stay afloat. He is pragmatic to a fault, trusting his instincts and his ship above all else, but a buried sense of justice simmers beneath his cynicism.
Lyra
Neutral
A former xeno-archaeologist for the Helios Conglomerate, Lyra went rogue after discovering evidence that The Silence might be a sentient, protective barrier, not a random malfunction. She now works as an information broker for the Echo rebellion, believing the corporations are provoking something ancient and dangerous. She is fiercely intelligent, driven by curiosity and a deep-seated fear of what her former employers might unleash.
Vex
Neutral
A veteran enforcer for the Iron Syndicate, Vex is ruthlessly efficient and utterly loyal to the corporate bottom line. He sees the galaxy as a series of assets and liabilities. He is not needlessly cruel, but he is completely devoid of sentimentality; if destroying a ship or a person advances Syndicate interests, he does it without hesitation. He has a particular disdain for 'independent operators' like Kael, whom he views as chaotic variables.
Silas
Neutral
A hermit and self-proclaimed 'Caretaker' who has lived alone in the irradiated ruins of Kaelos-7 for years. Silas claims to be a former imperial scientist who stayed behind during the evacuation to 'monitor the transition.' He speaks in cryptic riddles about The Silence, referring to it as 'the Dreaming Wall' and 'the Architect's breath.' While many think he's mad, his predictions about Silence events have proven unnervingly accurate. He survives by scavenging and maintaining ancient systems that others consider dead.
⚡ Key Events (8)
Echoes in the Debris
Kael's ship, the *Wandering Moth*, enters the graveyard of Kaelos-7. The player must navigate the treacherous debris field while being hailed by the threatening Vex. The mysterious signal grows stronger, leading to a derelict Architect artifact at the station's core. The player's choice—pursue the core for credits or the signal for mystery—determines immediate conflict and future alliances.
The Broker's Gambit
Depending on the initial choice, Kael either escapes to a neutral station with the data core (attracting Syndicate attention) or is guided to Lyra's hidden outpost by the signal. Lyra reveals her theory: The Silence is a neural network left by the Architects, and the signal from Kaelos-7 is a 'wake-up call'. She offers a deal: help her decrypt the signal's source on a dead world, and she'll provide safe passage and tech upgrades. Meanwhile, Vex's forces are closing in.
Into the Silent Zone
Traveling to the dead world 'Acheron Prime', The Silence activates with unusual intensity, stranding the *Wandering Moth*. The planet's surface holds the ruins of an Architect facility, but it's also a contested site: a Syndicate science team (sent by Vex) is already there, trying to forcibly tap into the network. The player must explore the ruins, avoid or confront Syndicate patrols, and find a way to safely interface with the ancient technology, all while the planet's environment and The Silence itself react unpredictably.
The Caretaker's Test
If Kael pursued the mysterious signal in the prologue, he eventually finds Silas's hidden compartment. The hermit subjects Kael to a series of verbal and environmental tests—adjusting gravity, playing distorted audio logs, asking philosophical questions—to gauge his intentions and resilience. Silas then offers a bargain: he will share what he knows about the signal's origin if Kael retrieves a specific data-canister from a collapsing section of the station that his aged body can no longer reach.
Syndicate Boarding Action
Vex, frustrated by Kael's evasion or betrayal, authorizes a direct boarding action on the *Wandering Moth* while it's docked at a neutral station or in transit through a low-security lane. Syndicate assault teams breach the airlock, forcing Kael into a desperate fight through the ship's cramped corridors. The goal is not just to capture Kael but to seize the ship's navigation logs and any recovered artifacts.
The Grindstone Auction
At the neutral station 'The Grindstone,' a black-market auction is held for a recovered Architect artifact—a 'Resonance Key' that is rumored to temporarily stabilize FTL travel in small Silence zones. Both the Iron Syndicate and Echo rebellion send proxies to bid. Kael can participate by bidding credits, offering services, or attempting to steal the key before or after the sale. The station's enigmatic owner, Madame Corso, oversees the event with ruthless neutrality.
Echo's Safehouse Compromised
If Kael has been working with Lyra and the rebellion, a coded distress signal arrives. A safehouse containing vital rebellion personnel and research on The Silence has been located by Syndicate hunters and is under siege. Kael must navigate a blockaded system, evade patrols, and extract the personnel and data cores before the safehouse is destroyed. Lyra's guilt and desperation are palpable; some of the people inside are her former colleagues.
The Whisper from the Void
While traveling through a region of intense Silence, the *Wandering Moth*'s systems pick up a new, faint signal—not the repeating beacon, but what sounds like fragmented speech in a unknown language. The signal is coming from a seemingly empty point in space. Investigating requires dropping out of FTL in the dead zone. There, sensors detect a derelict, non-human ship of unknown origin, perfectly preserved and floating silently. Its airlock is open, inviting yet ominous.
