📖 Story Backstory
The introduction and setting of the world, including its history.
The world is the Shattered Archipelago, a vast sea dotted with thousands of islands ranging from lush jungles to barren rocks. The age of colonial empires is waning, replaced by the chaotic rule of pirate lords, privateers, and independent island settlements. Magic is subtle and tied to the sea: strange weather phenomena, creatures of legend, and places where reality seems to fray. The greatest treasure isn't gold, but knowledge—ancient charts, star maps, and logs that reveal hidden routes and forgotten lands. The central mystery is the 'Tide's Echo' phenomenon, a lingering resonance of powerful maritime events that can reveal secrets or dangers to those who can perceive it.
👥 Characters (4)
Characters in this story. You will choose who to play as when you start.
Kaelen
Protagonist
A junior cartographer for the Royal Geographic Society, sent on a perilous field assignment to recover a legendary sea chart. Motivated by a thirst for genuine discovery and a desire to prove themselves beyond the stuffy halls of the Society. They possess a near-photographic memory for maps and coastlines.
Captain Rourke "Salt-Beard"
Neutral
The infamous captain of the *Sea Serpent*, a sleek brigantine known for its speed and audacious raids. A pragmatic pirate who values skill and loyalty over brutality, though he is merciless to those who cross him. He is rumoured to be searching for something more valuable than plunder.
Anya "Silk"
Neutral
A freelance information broker and smuggler operating in Port Royal. She trades in secrets, forged papers, and discreet cargo. Charming and duplicitous in equal measure, she has connections in every tavern and shadowy corner.
Marlowe
Neutral
The veteran boatswain (bosun) of whatever ship Kaelen ends up on. He knows every rope, spar, and plank of the vessel as if they were his own limbs. Gruff, superstitious, and deeply practical, he represents the 'salt of the earth' sailor. He distrusts scholars and 'landlubber nonsense' but has an unshakeable loyalty to his ship and captain.
⚡ Key Events (7)
A Deal in Port Royal
Kaelen must secure passage from Port Royal. They can seek out Captain Rourke at the docks, approach the Crown schooner's officer, or visit the Gilded Tankard to find Anya for information and alternatives. Each choice leads to a different negotiation, setting the tone for the early journey and establishing initial allies or obligations.
The First Echo
Several days into the voyage, the ship passes through the Shrouded Straits. A sudden, unnatural squall hits—a classic Tide's Echo of a legendary naval battle fought there decades ago. The crew must weather the storm. Kaelen, if their sea-sense is active or triggered by the event, perceives ghostly cannon flashes in the mist and hears faint, desperate shouts on the wind, gaining a clue about a hidden wreck or safe channel.
Isle of Whispers Approach
The ship arrives at the approximate coordinates of the Isle of Whispers. It is shrouded in a permanent, eerie fog. Strange, distorted sounds seem to emanate from the island itself. The crew is tense. A decision must be made: send a landing party (risking the unknown), attempt to map the coastline from the ship (slow, safer), or have Kaelen try to 'listen' to the island's Tide's Echo (a high seaSense check) to find a safe landing site.
Mutiny on the Murky Tide
If Kaelen chose a pirate vessel, a faction of the crew, led by a brutish quartermaster dissatisfied with the captain's chart-chasing, stages a mutiny during the night watch. Kaelen is caught in the middle. They must choose sides: aid the captain (risking death if the mutiny succeeds), join the mutineers (betraying their initial deal), or attempt to mediate or escape the chaos.
The Wreck of the Mercy
Following clues from the First Echo or Anya's information, the ship locates the final resting place of the *Marauder's Mercy*. It lies in a deep, dark trench, its hull broken but its stern cabin relatively intact. Diving is perilous due to depth, strong currents, and the possibility of the wreck being haunted by its final Tide's Echo. The legendary chart is believed to be in the captain's quarters.
Port of Shadows
The ship must make an unscheduled stop at Skullhaven, a lawless pirate port built into the cliffs of a volcanic island. It's a necessary resupply point, but fraught with danger. Here, Kaelen can seek rare supplies, sell information to other captains, hear new rumours about the Isle of Whispers, or get drawn into the port's cutthroat politics. Rival captains who have heard of their quest may be present.
Leviathan's Wake
In open waters, the ship crosses the path of a migrating Leviathan—a mythical, whale-like creature of immense size. It does not attack, but its mere passage creates massive waves and strange, disorienting currents. The crew must fight to keep the ship from capsizing. Furthermore, the Leviathan's passage creates an immense, fresh Tide's Echo of primordial power.
