📖 Story Backstory
The introduction and setting of the world, including its history.
The world of Solinar is dying. For generations, the sun has been slowly dimming, its light growing weaker with each passing year. This 'Great Dimming' has lengthened nights, stunted crops, and allowed fearsome creatures of shadow to creep from the edges of the map. Millennia ago, the Sun-Singer civilization flourished, using 'Echo' magic—a resonance with the sun's light—to perform great wonders. Their sudden, mysterious collapse left behind ruins and arcane artifacts. Now, the human kingdoms are fractured. The theocratic Archonate of Aethelgard denies the old magic, blaming the Dimming on ancestral sin. The nomadic Kethra tribes in the sun-scorched wastes worship the fading light. In the frozen north, the Dwarven Clans of Stoneheart delve ever deeper, seeking geothermal warmth. A unique lore rule governs this world: All potent magic is an 'Echo'—a remnant or reflection of the sun's original power. To cast a spell is to borrow a sliver of light that may not return, subtly accelerating the Dimming. Magic is therefore a sacrament and a sin.
👥 Characters (4)
Characters in this story. You will choose who to play as when you start.
Elara
Protagonist
A Historian-Scribe of the Grand Archive, Elara is brilliant but plagued by self-doubt and a deep-seated fear of authority. She is driven not by heroism, but by an obsessive need to understand the truth behind the world's decay. Her motivation is to prove the historical reality of the Sun-Singers, believing their lost knowledge is the key to halting the Dimming.
Kaelen
Neutral
A former knight of the Sunward Guard, Kaelen was cursed during a doomed expedition into the Sun-Singer ruins of the 'Shattered Spire'. The curse, a fragment of corrupted Echo magic called the 'Dusk-Taint', slowly transmutes his body into crystalline shadow. He is a bitter, pragmatic survivor, seeking a cure before he loses his humanity entirely.
Archivist Valerius
Neutral
Elara's direct superior and the gatekeeper of orthodoxy in the Grand Archive. He is not evil, but a true believer in the Archonate's doctrine that the past is a record of sin best left closed. He sees Elara's curiosity as a dangerous spiritual weakness. His motivation is to maintain order and prevent the 'heresies' that he believes caused the Dimming from resurfacing.
Asha of the Kethra
Neutral
A blind seer and elder of a prominent Kethra tribe. She perceives the world through the 'Echo'—feeling the warmth of living things and the cold voids of shadow. She is a keeper of oral histories far older than the Archonate's written records. She views the Dimming as a sickness of the world's soul, not a punishment.
⚡ Key Events (7)
The Glowing Fragment
In the silent depths of the Grand Archive, the newly discovered Sun-Tablet fragment activates in Elara's hands. It projects a holographic map pointing to the 'Sundered Pass' in the eastern mountains—a location not on any modern chart. This event forces Elara's first major choice: comply with Archonate law and report the artifact, or conceal it and pursue the map's secret. The choice immediately affects her reputation and available resources.
Shadows in the Lower Ward
While investigating leads on the Sundered Pass (or dealing with Archonate red tape), Elara is ambushed in the fog-choked Lower Ward by 'Gloomspawn'—twisted creatures born of concentrated shadow. Just as she is overwhelmed, Kaelen intervenes, his greatsword cutting through the darkness. He reveals he's been watching her, believing her research intersects with his quest for a cure. He offers a pact: his protection and knowledge of the wilds in exchange for her help deciphering Sun-Singer lore related to curses.
The Gate of Whispering Stone
The journey leads to the Sundered Pass, where a colossal archway of fused stone—the Gate of Whispering Stone—blocks the way. It is inert, but covered in Sun-Singer glyphs. To open it, the party must perform a 'Dawn Chant', a ritual that requires harmonizing Echo energy at the precise moment of dawn. However, a band of Kethra Sun-Tribesmen are camped at the site, performing their own vigil. They view the gate as a sacred tomb, not to be opened.
The Chantry of Fading Hymns
Beyond the Gate of Whispering Stone lies the first true Sun-Singer ruin: a half-collapsed chantry carved into the mountain. Faded murals depict the Sun-Singers in communion with a radiant figure. At its heart lies a dormant 'Resonance Crystal'—a focus for Echo magic. To activate it and access the deeper archives, the party must reconstruct a fragment of the 'Hymn of Dawn' from scattered stone tablets. However, the crystal's activation will draw the attention of a 'Shade-Stalker', a powerful Gloomspawn that has made the ruin its lair.
The Archonate's Inquisitor
News of the party's activities has reached Aethelgard. Inquisitor Malachi, a zealous and ruthless agent of the Archonate, intercepts them at a crossroads town. He demands the surrender of all Sun-Singer artifacts and Elara's return for 'doctrinal realignment.' He is accompanied by two Sunward Guards. This is a direct confrontation with the authority Elara once served.
Kethra Sun-Vigil
While traveling the sun-scorched wastes, the party encounters a Kethra tribe during their 'Sun-Vigil'—a ritual where they stand motionless from dawn until noon, absorbing the fading light. The tribe's elder, a blind seer named Asha, invites the party to join. Participating is a test of endurance (Constitution) and will (Echo), but succeeding can grant a profound blessing: a temporary boon that makes Echo magic more efficient for a week. Refusing is a grave insult.
The Dusk-Taint's Price
Kaelen's curse reaches a crisis point. At a camp during dusk, the Dusk-Taint flares violently, causing him immense pain and partially transforming his arm into brittle, shadowy crystal. He confesses that the taint is progressing faster than he admitted; he can feel his memories and emotions being leeched away. He reveals the true name of the entity that cursed him in the Shattered Spire: 'Vespara, the Last Sigh of Dusk.' Speaking the name causes the shadows to writhe. The party must immediately find a source of pure dawn-light to stabilize him, or risk him becoming a hostile 'Dusk-Wraith.'
