📖 Story Backstory
The introduction and setting of the world, including its history.
The city-state of Aethelgard, a sprawling metropolis of towering art deco spires and fog-choked canals, runs on a secret economy: the memory trade. Through advanced neuro-tech, human experiences can be extracted, crystallized into 'Echoes,' and sold. The elite use them for pleasure, to forget guilt, or to acquire skills. The trade is controlled by shadowy syndicates and tacitly allowed by a corrupt city council. The murder of Elara Vance, daughter of a memory magnate, threatens to expose the rotten core of the entire system. The player is a private investigator, operating in the gray zone between the law and the underworld, hired to find a truth everyone wants buried.
👥 Characters (4)
Characters in this story. You will choose who to play as when you start.
Silas Caine
Protagonist
A former City Watch detective who quit in disgust over the corruption. Now a freelance PI, he walks the line between the law and the underworld to make ends meet. He's good at finding things people want hidden, but he's haunted by a past case where his pursuit of truth got an innocent person killed.
Julian Vance
Neutral
The younger brother of the victim, Elara Vance. Heir to the Vance family fortune, which was built on the memory trade. Publicly, he's a reclusive philanthropist. Privately, he's consumed by doubt and grief, convinced his sister was murdered to silence her.
Inspector Aris Thorne
Neutral
A high-ranking, notoriously corrupt police inspector. He runs the Vice & Echoes division, which means he oversees—and profits from—the very trade he's supposed to regulate. He knew Silas from the old days and considers him a loose end.
Mara Finch
Neutral
A former evidence clerk for the City Watch, Precinct 7. She was 'encouraged to retire' after refusing to alter a log for Inspector Thorne. Now she survives on piecemeal work and lives in fear of the collectors Thorne sends to remind her of her debts. She possesses a meticulous, almost photographic memory for case files and evidence chains.
⚡ Key Events (7)
The Empty Penthouse
Silas arrives at the Vance penthouse, a monument to sterile luxury high above the fog. The official clean-up has been thorough, but not perfect. A faint scent of perfume lingers. The gilded birdcage pendant is missing from the evidence log. A single, overlooked shard of a broken Echo crystal winks from under a divan. Thorne's men are posted outside, watching. Silas must search the scene, decide how to deal with the watchmen, and retrieve the clue.
Echoes in the Canalworks
The Fractured Echo, when viewed in a back-alley Reader den, reveals a chaotic, terrifying memory: not of Elara, but of someone watching her, filled with panic and rage. The memory is tied to a location—a disused warehouse on the edge of the Canalworks, known as a drop point for illegal Echo smugglers. To learn more, Silas must venture into the underworld, negotiate with or evade the canal gangs, and infiltrate the warehouse.
The Gilded Masquerade
The clue leads to a lavish charity masquerade ball at the Spire Gallery, hosted by a rival memory magnate. Julian secures an invitation for Silas. Amidst the champagne and masks, Silas must identify the person from the Echo, gather intelligence from the gossiping elite, and avoid Thorne, who is also present as 'security'. The truth is hidden behind smiles and lies.
A Debt Called In
An old contact from Silas's Watch days, a disgraced evidence clerk named Mara, reaches out. She's in trouble with Thorne's collectors and needs help. In return, she offers access to the sealed evidence locker from the night of Elara's death—evidence Thorne officially logged as 'destroyed.' Silas must decide whether to help a desperate woman and risk Thorne's direct wrath for a potential breakthrough.
The Whispering Tailor
A clue points to an exclusive tailor who fashioned a unique gown for Elara shortly before her death. The tailor, Mr. Finch, operates a discreet shop in Midtown. He's a vault of secrets for the elite, but his loyalty is to his clients' privacy. Extracting information from him requires subtlety, not force.
Blood in the Water
Thorne makes his move. Silas is ambushed in a foggy canal alley by hired muscle. It's not an attempt to kill him, but to deliver a message: a brutal beating and a warning to drop the case. The assailants leave him with a 'gift'—a pristine, high-grade Echo labeled 'The Cost of Truth.'
The Councilman's Gambit
A mid-level city councilman, seeking to undermine a rival, anonymously leaks documents to Silas. They suggest Elara was about to expose not just a murder, but a city-wide conspiracy involving memory tax fraud that implicates the highest levels of government. The councilman offers a partnership: Silas's investigation becomes a weapon in a political war.
