📖 Story Backstory
The introduction and setting of the world, including its history.
In the Age of Radiance, the Sun-King and Moon-Queen ruled the celestial cycle, their love sustaining the world. Their children, the Star-Gods, grew jealous and orchestrated a betrayal that left the Sun-King mortally wounded and the Moon-Queen imprisoned in a silver cage of her own tears. The Sun-King's dying oath bound his essence to a mortal lineage—the Dawnsworn—tasked with healing the sky. Generations have passed; the sun weakens, crops fail, and strange creatures emerge from the lengthening shadows. The celestial machinery is breaking down. Only by undertaking three mythic trials—recovering the Sun-King's scattered relics—can a Dawnsworn hope to reignite the sun. But the Star-Gods watch from the void, and mortal kingdoms scheme in the gloom.
👥 Characters (4)
Characters in this story. You will choose who to play as when you start.
Kaelen
Protagonist
Kaelen is the latest in the dwindling Dawnsworn line, a bloodline bound by the Sun-King's dying oath. He did not seek this destiny; it was a duty passed down by a mother who died whispering of failed ancestors. He is pragmatic, skeptical of gods, and motivated more by a desire to see true daylight—a thing he has only heard in stories—than by blind faith. His secret: he fears he is not brave, only stubborn, and that his resolve will break when true sacrifice is demanded.
Lyra
Neutral
Lyra is a Shade-Whisperer, a human who was trapped in the Shadowlands during a solar eclipse and emerged changed. She can navigate the deepening shadows and commune with the restless dead and void-touched creatures. Cynical and sharp-tongued, she sells her services as a guide through dark places. Her secret: the light in her cage pendant is a fragment of her own stolen soul, and she believes the Dawnsworn's success might be her only chance to reclaim it fully.
Bastian
Neutral
The last Master Artificer of the Sun-King's cult, Bastian maintains the few remaining celestial artifacts and forges tools for the Dawnsworn. He is a man of deep faith in craftsmanship over prayer, believing the gods failed because their 'machinery' broke. He is paternal towards Kaelen but impatient with mystical talk. His secret: his clockwork arm is powered by a sliver of the true sun, a relic he stole to keep alive. Its power is fading, and with it, his life.
Elara
Neutral
Elara is the Keeper of the Silver Cage, the last living priestess of the imprisoned Moon-Queen. She maintains the rituals meant to slow the Moon-Queen's weeping, which forms the silver bars of her prison. Elara is devout but pragmatic, having watched generations of Dawnsworn fail. Her secret: she believes the only way to free the Moon-Queen is to shatter the cage, which would release a cataclysmic flood of lunar tears—potentially drowning the world in sorrow before the sun can be reignited.
⚡ Key Events (7)
The Oath and the Burden
Within the Temple of the Dusk, Kaelen is bound by the ancient oath. The High Priestess presents the Oath-Band and speaks of the first trial at the Sunken Observatory. The air thrums with weak magic and desperate hope. As the ritual concludes, Kaelen must choose how to engage with his new destiny: accept the burden with solemn determination, question the priestess about the specifics of failure and past Dawnsworn, or seek out Bastian in the forges below for practical counsel first.
The Forge of Fading Light
If Kaelen seeks out Bastian, he finds the artificer in his hidden forge, toiling over a failing sun-lamp. Bastian offers a sun-touched dagger and cryptic advice about the Sunken Observatory, but his clockwork arm sputters ominously. Kaelen can press him about his past, accept the weapon gratefully, or ask about the nature of the sun-sliver powering the arm.
The Path Through Twilight
To reach the Sunken Observatory, Kaelen must traverse the Gloomwood. Lyra offers her services as a guide for a price—a future favor, or a share of any 'light-touched' relics found. Kaelen can accept her deal, attempt to bargain her down, or refuse and try to navigate the woods alone.
Whispers in the Gloomwood
During the journey, the party encounters a 'Echo-Node'—a place where the Law of Echoing Deeds has manifested strongly. They might find the spectral remains of a past Dawnsworn's final stand, a grove warped by an ancient betrayal, or a shrine where a desperate prayer created a permanent zone of calm. Interacting with the Echo can yield lore, temporary boons, or unforeseen dangers.
The Shrine of Weeping Silver
Guided by lore or Lyra's knowledge, Kaelen finds the remote shrine where Elara tends the Silver Cage. The air is cold and tastes of salt. The Keeper explains the nature of the Moon-Queen's imprisonment and hints that the second trial—retrieving the Sun-King's Heart—is linked to her sorrow. Kaelen can ask about the Cage's nature, inquire about past Dawnsworn, or question the morality of the Sun-King's oath that bound his love.
Eclipse at the Sunken Observatory
Within the depths of the Observatory, Kaelen triggers or witnesses a minor, localized celestial event—a phantom eclipse created by misaligned machinery. This event draws the attention of a Star-God's lesser avatar or a powerful echo of the original betrayal. The party must navigate the ensuing chaos: hide from the entity, attempt to realign the machinery to end the eclipse, or use the disruption to access a sealed chamber.
The Price of a Guide
Lyra calls in her owed favor, or presents her price if it was deferred. Her request is personal and dangerous: she needs Kaelen to retrieve the 'Cage-Key'—a fragment of solidified moonlight from the heart of the Gloomwood, a place where her own soul-fragment is strongest and most vulnerable. Agreeing risks Kaelen's mission and health; refusing risks losing Lyra's alliance and potentially damning her to eternal fragmentation.
