📖 Story Backstory
The introduction and setting of the world, including its history.
The world of Terranova was once shared by many races until the Awakening of the Titanai three millennia ago. These giant beings emerged from the Great Mountain Range, their bodies infused with elemental forces that grant them near-immortality and power over earth, fire, water, and air. Standing between thirty to three hundred feet tall, the Titanai easily subjugated all other races. Humanity, being the most numerous and adaptable, was reduced to servitude rather than extermination. Humans now serve as household servants, mine workers, farmhands, and soldiers in the Titanai armies. They live in designated quarters called Underhalls beneath the giants' cities, forbidden from owning property, bearing arms, or learning to read. The Titanai view humans as barely sentient vermin—useful but disposable. The current ruler, Supreme Colossus Vorath the Unyielding, has maintained this order for two thousand years, crushing any whisper of dissent with terrifying efficiency.
👥 Characters (4)
Characters in this story. You will choose who to play as when you start.
Supreme Colossus Vorath the Unyielding
The supreme ruler of the Colossi Empire for two millennia, Vorath is the embodiment of Titanai dominance. He has witnessed the rise and fall of countless human generations, viewing them as insects worthy only of exploitation. His rule is absolute, his will unbreakable, and his power over the elements of earth and air is unmatched. Yet his long reign has made him arrogant—he cannot fathom that his servants could ever truly threaten him.
Colossus Lithara of the Crimson Flame
A fire Titanai commander assigned to the Vorath's Terrace sector, Lithara enforces the compliance laws with fierce intensity. She was the one who burned the previous Underhall to the ground fifteen years ago after a failed rebellion, killing twelve thousand humans in a single night. She enjoys combat, respects strength, and views mercy as weakness. Her sector is known as the most harshly governed.
Kael Thornwood
A third-generation servant in the Underhall of Vorath's Terrace, Kael has spent his life cleaning the impossible heights of giant chambers and carrying messages through the labyrinthine tunnels. He has learned to be invisible, to be silent, to be nothing—exactly what the Compliance Watch demands. Yet beneath his practiced subservience burns a quiet fury. His mother was taken to the Silence Pits five years ago for 'reading' (she was teaching children their letters), and his father drank himself to death. Kael has joined the Shadow Network, a secret group of humans who pass forbidden knowledge and dreams of rebellion through coded messages. He plays the role of a perfect servant while waiting for his moment.
Mira Dustwalker
The senior cook in Vorath's Terrace's kitchen, Mira has served the giants for twenty years. She rose through the ranks by producing meals that please the Titanai palate—complicated by the fact that giants find most human cooking bland. What the Compliance Watch does not know is that Mira is the leader of the Shadow Network's Vorath's Terrace cell. She coordinates information flow, hides fugitives in the massive kitchen storerooms, and uses her access to giant gatherings to eavesdrop on plans. She has survived two purges and saved dozens of dissidents by feeding information to the right guards at the right time. Her philosophy is patience: the giants will fall someday; she must simply ensure her people survive until that day.
⚡ Key Events (10)
Morning Duties
Kael Thornwood begins his day as a message runner in the Underhall of Vorath's Terrace. His duties include carrying coded messages between human sectors and occasionally delivering minor items to the giant quarters—always at the top of seemingly endless stairs, always under the watchful eyes of Compliance Watch guards. Today, he carries a laundry list that contains hidden coordinates for a Shadow Network meeting. The Tribute Festival approaches, and tensions run high.
The Shadow Network
Kael meets with Mira Dustwalker in the cramped storage alcove behind the provision halls. Mira is the senior cook and leader of the local resistance cell. She briefs Kael on concerning developments: Lithara the Crimson Flame has increased patrols, and there are rumors the Compliance Watch has a new interrogation technique that can detect even silent thoughts. The Shadow Network must decide whether to go dormant or act before the Tribute Festival.
Lithara's Inspection
Colossus Lithara makes a surprise inspection of the Underhall. Her presence brings overwhelming heat, burning away shadows and making concealment impossible. She walks through the human quarters like a goddess of destruction, demanding tribute offerings and randomly selecting humans for examination. Her eyes—twin suns—scan the crowd with terrible intensity. Kael must stay invisible while Mira tries to gather intelligence from the Titanai's casual conversations.
The Coded Warning
During his morning message run, Kael intercepts a fragment of conversation between two Compliance Watch guards discussing 'the upcoming cleansing.' Using the Shadow Network's cipher, he deciphers a hidden message: Lithara plans to conduct random Obedience Band fittings on the entire Underhall population during the Tribute Festival. The band suppresses strength and voice, making any resistance impossible. Kael must decide whether to risk delivering this information to Mira immediately or complete his scheduled routes first—either choice carries danger.
Tribute Festival Preparations
The Underhall buzzes with frantic activity as humans prepare for the annual Tribute Festival—a celebration of Titanai dominance where humans must perform acts of submission for giant entertainment. Kael is assigned to transport ceremonial offerings (massive amounts of food and flowers) to the upper terraces. The work is grueling, the timeline impossible, and the Compliance Watch whips anyone who slows. Yet in the chaos, opportunities arise: guards are distracted, schedules are disrupted, and secret messages move more easily. Mira slips Kael a new cipher key during a brief encounter in the supply corridor.
The Forbidden Library
While delivering messages near the ancient section of the Underhall, Kael discovers a hidden door behind collapsed shelving. Behind it lies a pre-Titanai chamber untouched for millennia—containing actual written books. The Compliance Watch destroys all writing; the ability to read is punishable by death. Among the crumbling texts, Kael finds a map of the Deep Tunnels passageways that predate the Titanai conquest, and a fragment of a journal mentioning 'the Resonance Killers'—weapons that can disrupt Titanai communication. The chamber begins to shake; something approaches.
Lithara's Audience Chamber
Kael is selected—along with twelve other servants—for mandatory attendance at a private gathering of minor Titanai in Lithara's audience chamber. The giants discuss military matters freely, assuming their servants are too simple to understand. Kael overhears critical intelligence: the Titanai are preparing to expand their territory into the western mountains, requiring massive increases in human tribute. More terrifyingly, Lithara mentions 'the Quiet Ones'—a group of humans who have learned to hear Titanai resonance. She intends to make an example of them during the Festival. Kael must maintain perfect composure while absorbing information that could doom his people if mishandled.
The Obedience Band Fitting
The Compliance Watch arrives at the Underhall sector with crates of Obedience Bands. Every human must be fitted with the suppression collars—not just suspects anymore, but the entire population. Kael watches as his neighbors submit, their voices stolen, their strength drained. Some beg. Some fight and are beaten. Some are taken away and never return. Mira has prepared hidden bands with faulty resonance crystals, but there are not enough. Kael must witness the fitting of someone close to him—a choice who gets the real band versus the fake one. Mira looks to Kael for the decision.
The Deep Tunnel Escape
The information from the forbidden library leads to action. Using the memorized map, Kael guides a small group—including several Shadow Network members and their families—through the Deep Tunnels beneath the Underhall. These passages predate Titanai rule and are not monitored. However, the tunnels are unstable, filled with ancient traps, and populated by creatures that fled underground when the giants rose. The group must move silently, make impossible choices about who carries the wounded, and navigate by touch and memory. At a critical junction, the tunnel floods—someone must hold a breach closed while others escape.
The Festival Rebellion
The Tribute Festival reaches its climax—and so does the rebellion. While the Titanai watch their entertainment below, Kael and the Shadow Network execute a coordinated plan: disrupting the tribute ceremonies, freeing prisoners from the Silence Pits, and broadcasting the location of hidden supplies to every Underhall through the Resonance Killer technology discovered in the library. Lithara discovers the disturbance and comes to crush it personally. In the chaos, Kael faces a choice that could change everything: attack Lithara directly to give others time to escape, or flee with the critical supplies and live to fight another day. The fate of the rebellion hangs on this decision.
