Echoes of Unbound Souls
In the Aethelgard Empire, every soul is born bound to a Fate-Stone, its destiny inscribed at birth. To defy one's fate is heresy. But when an anomaly shatters the protagonist's stone, they are cast out as a 'Shattered Soul'—a being without a destiny, hunted by the Empire but free to forge their own path in a vast, dangerous world. Will they hide in the shadows, or will they ignite a rebellion to shatter the chains of fate for all?

📖 Story Backstory
The introduction and setting of the world, including its history.
The world of Veridia is dominated by the Aethelgard Empire, which has maintained peace and order for a millennium through the 'Great Concord,' a system where every citizen's life path is determined by their Fate-Stone. This magic was gifted by the 'Architects,' mysterious god-like beings who vanished long ago. Those born without a fate or whose stones are destroyed are called Shattered Souls. They are considered abominations, capable of wielding 'Wild Magic'—a chaotic and powerful force that draws its power from raw emotion and conviction, a direct threat to the Empire's controlled 'Sanctioned Magic.' The story begins in the imperial capital, Aethel.
👥 Characters (4)
Characters in this story. You will choose who to play as when you start.
Kaelen
Protagonist
Born and raised in the lower districts of Aethel, Kaelen expected a simple, pre-written life as an artisan or laborer. The shattering of their Fate-Stone has thrown them into a world they are completely unprepared for. They are not a hero, just a survivor, but possess a powerful, unawakened inner will. Their main motivation is to survive and understand what it means to be a Shattered Soul.
Fenrir the Unwritten
Fenrir is one of the few Shattered Souls who has survived for decades. He was a former Imperial legionnaire whose stone shattered during a battle. He now leads a small, secretive network of rebels and outcasts known as the Free Echoes. He seeks to find other Shattered Souls and guide them, believing they are the key to breaking the Empire's hold. He is gruff and cynical but possesses a deep-seated desire to protect the innocent.
Justicar Lyra
Neutral
Lyra is the rising star of the Justicars, a zealous believer in the Great Concord and the order it brings. She sees Shattered Souls not as people, but as chaotic cancers that threaten the millennium of peace the Empire has built. Her pursuit of Kaelen is not just a job; it is a sacred duty. Secretly, her younger brother's Fate-Stone was flawed, leading to his 'pacification'—a trauma that fuels her obsessive need to uphold the system.
Elara
Neutral
An acolyte in Aethel's Great Scriptorium, Elara's official role is to copy and preserve approved historical texts. In secret, she is a member of the 'Silent Seekers,' a hidden society of academics who collect and study forbidden knowledge. She witnessed the shattering of Kaelen's stone and saw it not as a heresy, but as a phenomenon that defies all known magical law. Her goal is to find Kaelen to understand the truth of their existence.
⚡ Key Events (7)
The Shattering
At the Binding Ceremony in Aethel's Grand Plaza, the protagonist's Fate-Stone does not accept its inscription. Instead, it cracks and explodes in a shower of raw magical energy. As Imperial Justicars react to the 'heresy,' a grizzled stranger, Fenrir, creates a diversion, urging the newly-made Shattered Soul to flee.
Flight Through the Underbelly
Choosing a path of escape, Kaelen must navigate the dark, confusing, and dangerous depths of Aethel. Whether in the grime of the sewers or the shadowed alleys of the lower districts, the sounds of Justicar patrols are a constant threat. This is a desperate flight for survival, not a battle.
Cornered
Kaelen's luck runs out. A patrol of Justicars, perhaps led by a junior officer, corners them in a dead-end alley or a sewer nexus. There is no escape. Just as they prepare for the worst, Fenrir the Unwritten appears, his rune-etched axe a blur of motion, creating an opening.
A Glimmer of Hope
Fenrir leads Kaelen through a series of hidden passages to a safehouse concealed beneath a nondescript tavern. Here, amidst a small group of other outcasts, Kaelen finds their first moment of respite. Fenrir explains the basics: what a Shattered Soul is, the nature of Wild Magic, and his rebel group, the Free Echoes.
The Scholar's Inquiry
A quiet knock comes at a secret entrance to the safehouse. A young acolyte, Elara, has tracked Kaelen here. She is not hostile; she is terrified but driven by insatiable curiosity. She offers forbidden lore and information from the Imperial archives in exchange for a chance to study Kaelen's unique condition.
The Justicar's Net
Justicar Lyra, frustrated by the lack of progress, enacts a brutal city-wide lockdown on the district where Kaelen is hiding. Patrols are quadrupled, and every citizen is questioned. Kaelen must find a way out of the tightening cordon before it closes completely.
Echoes of the Past
While exploring an ancient ruin, the Shattered Fate-Stone Shard in Kaelen's possession begins to hum with power. Clutching it, Kaelen is struck by a powerful, disorienting vision: a glimpse of the world before the Empire, a flash of a colossal being of light and geometry—an Architect—and the feeling of a promise being broken.
