📖 Story Backstory
The introduction and setting of the world, including its history.
The world of Aerthos is governed by the Law of Binding. Millennia ago, powerful mages established a global system of magical contracts to end an age of chaos. This system, now overseen by the monolithic Concordance, ensures order by binding every individual to oaths of loyalty, service, and law through an innate 'Soul-Rune'. Those who attempt to break these oaths suffer a painful death. However, a rare few are born with a fractured Soul-Rune. They are the 'Breakers,' immune to the Law of Binding and thus seen as threats to the entire world order. Most are captured and imprisoned, or 're-calibrated' in a process that erases their minds. The story takes place on the continent of Ordina, the heart of the Concordance's power, but quickly moves to the Unbound Wilds—a massive, untamed landmass filled with the ruins of civilizations from before the Binding, teeming with strange creatures and forgotten magic.

A brilliant but obsessive historian from the capital city of Oakhaven. Elara believes the history of the Age of Chaos has been deliberately suppressed by the Concordance. She willingly entered a binding research grant with a wealthy patron to fund her expedition into the Unbound Wilds to find the 'First Spire,' the mythical place where the Law of Binding was created.
Garrus

A former Oathsworn Paladin, one of the Concordance's elite enforcers. Garrus was disgraced and magically stripped of his station after he failed to capture a high-profile Breaker. Now an outcast himself, he sells his sword as a mercenary in Freehold, taking on the dangerous jobs no one else will.
Inquisitor Valerius
A fanatical and ruthlessly efficient Oathsworn Inquisitor, Valerius has dedicated his life to enforcing the Law of Binding. Word spreads through Freehold like wildfire: an Inquisitor has been spotted on the road, accompanied by a retinue of Oathsworn soldiers. He is observing, gathering information, and making it known that the Concordance's reach is long. The relative safety of Freehold has vanished.
Garrus's Dilemma
Inquisitor Valerius publicly posts a bounty for the capture of the Breaker who escaped the Black-Iron Quarry. He then privately approaches Garrus, offering him not just a fortune in gold, but a chance at 'atonement'—a path back into the Concordance's good graces. Garrus is torn between his hatred for the system that cast him out and the deeply ingrained ideology that demands he destroy the 'chaos' Kaelen represents.

Deciding that Freehold is a den of sedition that harbors a dangerous Breaker, Inquisitor Valerius mobilizes his forces for a full-scale assault. Alarms ring through the town as Concordance soldiers march on the gates. The inhabitants must make a stand or be crushed. Kaelen is at the center of the conflict; their presence brought this doom upon the town, and their power may be the only thing that can save it.
