📖 Story Backstory
The introduction and setting of the world, including its history.
The world is a vast sky-sea known as the Azure Expanse, dotted with floating islands of various sizes. Travel between islands is accomplished via arcane skyships, powered by magical crystals and navigated by skilled crews. The society is built around trade, exploration, and a highly formalized system of piracy. The most prestigious institution for learning these arts is Aethelgard Academy. Magic is common, often tied to the natural elements, with a special reverence for the will of the sea itself.

The Protagonist
Protagonist
Hailing from a small, landlocked island, the protagonist is a fish out of water at Aethelgard. They enrolled through a rare scholarship, driven by a deep yearning for adventure and a fascination with the magical sea they only read about in books. They are eager to learn and prove they belong, but their lack of practical experience makes them an underdog.
Finnian 'Finn' Blackwood
Neutral
Finn is the scion of the legendary Blackwood pirate family, a legacy that is both his greatest strength and his heaviest burden. He is a naturally talented sailor and duelist, but his arrogance often gets him into trouble. He sees the protagonist as a rival, especially if they show any unusual talent.
Cora 'Cori' Saltwind
Neutral
A third-year student and a brilliant Shanty-Singer, Cori is more interested in the ancient lore of the Azure Expanse than in fame or fortune. She is a well of knowledge about the Sea's Accord, magical creatures, and forgotten islands. She serves as a prefect for one of the school's Fleets.
Kaelen 'Gale' Ironhand
Neutral
The head professor of Corsair Combat and a former pirate captain of considerable renown. Ironhand lost his arm to a sea leviathan decades ago and retired to Aethelgard, believing that the next generation of seafarers should be sharp enough to avoid his mistakes. He is a brutally honest and demanding teacher who despises arrogance and respects only hard-won skill.
⚡ Key Events (7)
Arrival at Aethelgard
The protagonist steps off the ferry and onto the bustling docks of Aethelgard Academy. The air buzzes with magic and chatter. As they take in the overwhelming sight of the floating school, they are jostled hard from behind by a cocky student, Finn Blackwood, who barely glances back. This is the first test of their nerve in this new environment.
The Fleet Sorting
All first-year students gather in the great hall. The headmaster announces the sorting challenge: each student must navigate a miniature enchanted skiff through a treacherous course in a giant, water-filled celestial globe. The skiff is controlled by the student's own innate magical aptitude. This is where students are sorted into one of the four Fleets: Kraken, Serpent, Albatross, or Turtle.
First Sparring Match
The first practical exam is a fleet-wide competition. Teams are tasked with a treasure hunt in the 'Sparring Shallows,' a collection of small, uninhabited rocks near the academy. The goal is to be the first to retrieve a magical flag from a designated islet. Other teams are fair game for challenges, as long as the Sea's Accord is followed by issuing a formal duel.
A Lesson with Ironhand
During the first 'Corsair Combat 101' class, Professor Ironhand announces a 'simple' practical test: disarm a training automaton. When Finn Blackwood's flashy technique fails, Ironhand singles out the protagonist, ordering them to demonstrate the 'right way'—emphasizing fundamentals over flair. It's a direct challenge in front of the entire class.
The Whispering Shoals
As a field trip for the 'Magical Ecology' class, students are taken to the Whispering Shoals, a series of small islets known for their unique flora and fauna. The trip is supposed to be a simple collection exercise, but the ship's Heartstone begins to resonate strangely, and a herd of majestic Sky-Mantas appears, blocking the path. The professor panics, unsure of how to proceed without angering them.
The Smuggler's Gambit
While visiting the lower docks late at night, the protagonist stumbles upon a clandestine meeting. Unmarked crates are being loaded onto a nondescript skiff by shady figures. They are members of the Gilded Hand, a smuggling ring that operates outside the Sea's Accord. The protagonist overhears them talking about bypassing the academy's patrols with a dangerous, forbidden artifact.
The Chart of a Thousand Stars
While studying with Cori in the academy's Grand Archives, she discovers an anomaly: a small, hidden compartment in an ancient tome about celestial navigation. Inside is a fragment of a star chart made of woven moonlight, humming with faint magic. Cori recognizes it as part of the legendary 'Chart of a Thousand Stars,' a map said to lead to the 'Graveyard of Ships,' a place of immense treasure and danger.
