📖 Story Backstory
The introduction and setting of the world, including its history.
The world is one where magic is an academic discipline, studied and refined at institutions like Silverwood Academy. The Academy is an island of order and knowledge in a world where wild, untamed magic still exists. Beneath the school lies the Labyrinth of Echoes, a pre-academic magical construct of unknown origin. It is a dungeon that shifts and reconfigures itself, filled with magical creatures and phenomena. The Academy forbids entry, as many have been lost to its depths over the centuries. The most important rule of this world is that magic is fueled by memories. A simple cantrip might cost the memory of what one had for breakfast, while a powerful reality-bending spell could erase the memory of a loved one's face or a core part of one's identity. This makes powerful mages potent but often tragic figures, their minds riddled with holes.
👥 Characters (4)
Characters in this story. You will choose who to play as when you start.
Elara Vance
Protagonist
Elara is a driven and talented student at Silverwood, but her academic pursuits are a means to an end. Her older brother, Liam, vanished five years ago, and she is convinced he was lost within the Labyrinth of Echoes. She enrolled in the academy solely to gain the skills and access needed to find him. This single-minded goal makes her both incredibly resourceful and dangerously reckless.
Kaelen 'Kael' Theron
Kael is a prodigy, the top student in their year, and comes from a long line of distinguished mages. He believes in the rules and the system, seeing them as the only safe way to handle the inherent dangers of magic. He is fascinated by the theoretical principles of the Labyrinth but would never dream of breaking the rules to enter it. He is often pitted against Elara as an academic rival, though he secretly admires her raw talent and drive.
Seraphina
A final-year student and a prefect, Seraphina is a mystery to most. She is an exceptionally powerful mage, specializing in divination and abjuration. She is rumored to be part of a secret society of students and faculty, the 'Chartographers', who monitor the Labyrinth. She walks the line between enforcing the school's rules and pursuing her own agenda related to the dungeon.
Professor Alistair Finch
Neutral
As Silverwood's Professor of Magical History, Finch is a walking encyclopedia of forgotten lore. Publicly, he is a staunch traditionalist who warns students against the Labyrinth. Secretly, he is a former explorer of its depths, one who lost colleagues and precious memories to its passages. He now studies it from a safe distance, driven by a desire to understand it and prevent another tragedy.
⚡ Key Events (7)
The Hidden Note
Late in the Grand Library, while examining a book that once belonged to their missing brother, Liam, the protagonist discovers a hidden note. It contains a riddle: 'Where silver wood meets stone below, the silent echo starts to grow. Seek the serpent eating its own tail, and you may yet pick up the trail.' The note is clearly a clue leading to the forbidden Labyrinth. The protagonist must decide: show the note to a professor or the Headmaster, risking confiscation and punishment, or trust the clue and seek out this 'serpent' symbol on their own.
The Ouroboros Archway
Following the riddle leads the protagonist to the Academy's sub-basement archives, a dusty and forgotten place. Behind a row of collapsing shelves, they find an old stone archway, carved with the image of a serpent eating its own tail—an Ouroboros. As they approach, the air grows cold and the stone of the archway seems to shimmer, revealing a descending stone staircase wreathed in faint, pulsing magical energy. This is the entrance to the Labyrinth of Echoes. The first few steps are unnervingly quiet.
The Chamber of Whispering Stairs
The staircase opens into a vast chamber where dozens of floating staircases twist and intersect in impossible ways. Faint whispers echo through the air—fragments of conversations, stray thoughts, and dying words from those who came before. Navigating the stairs requires focus and magical aptitude. A misstep could send one falling into the misty abyss below. Here, the protagonist encounters their first Labyrinthine creature: a 'Whisper-Wisp', a being made of coalesced sound and forgotten words that attacks by creating deafening, disorienting noise.
The Midterm Examination
The time for the Transmutation midterm has arrived. The protagonist must sit for a rigorous practical exam under the watchful eye of the faculty. Success requires both theoretical knowledge and precise spellcasting. Performing well will bolster academic standing and earn respect, while failure could lead to detention, mandatory tutoring with a rival, or even academic probation.
The Mirrored Hall
The Labyrinth shifts, leading into a long hall lined with flawless, full-length mirrors. The reflections are not quite right. They show not the present, but echoes of what could be—reflections of the protagonist crowned in glory, broken in despair, or as a stranger with forgotten eyes. The mirrors whisper temptations and doubts, feeding on insecurity and draining willpower.
A Professor's Warning
Shortly after a noteworthy success or failure (either in the Labyrinth or during an exam), Professor Finch requests a meeting in his office. Surrounded by towering stacks of books, he offers a cup of tea and a cryptic warning. He speaks of a 'thirst' the Labyrinth has and cautions against paying its price too freely, alluding to his own past without giving specifics.
Liam's Hidden Cache
Guided by the Memento Compass pulsing erratically, the protagonist discovers a section of wall in the Labyrinth that is magically disguised. Behind it is a small, dusty alcove, clearly a hidden resting spot. Inside is a tarnished silver locket and a single, preserved journal page. The page details Liam's growing fear of the Labyrinth's influence on his mind and mentions a 'Guardian' that protects the 'heart' of the maze.
