📖 Story Backstory
The introduction and setting of the world, including its history.
Fifty years ago, the 'Fracture' tore reality apart. It wasn't a war or a plague, but a silent, cascading event that warped physics and opened rifts to somewhere... else. From these rifts emerged the 'Maw-beasts'—creatures of nightmare that defy biological laws. In the chaos, some humans exposed to rift energy were mutated, developing supernatural abilities. They are known as the 'Changed,' and are often feared, hunted, or exploited. The story is set in the metropolis of Aethelburg, now known as 'The Sprawl,' one of the last major urban centers. It's a city of stark contrasts: the fortified, clean-air 'Spire' where the elite reside, and the sprawling, decaying 'Warrens' below, where most of humanity survives amidst crime, pollution, and crumbling infrastructure. Technology is a hodgepodge of salvaged pre-Fracture devices and makeshift jury-rigged contraptions.
👥 Characters (4)
Characters in this story. You will choose who to play as when you start.
Kaelen 'Kael' Vance
Protagonist
A former detective with the pre-consolidation Aethelburg P.D., Kael left the force after a case involving a 'Changed' went horribly wrong, resulting in the death of his partner. Now he works as a private investigator, taking the cases no one else will touch. He is one of the 'Changed' himself, possessing the rare ability to sense 'Echoes,' a power he keeps secret and views as more of a curse than a gift.
Elias Thorne
Neutral
Thorne is the CEO of 'Aether-Gen,' a corporation that controls The Spire's air and water recycling systems, making him one of the most powerful men in the city. He lives a life of extreme privilege, completely insulated from the horrors of the world below. His public image is that of a ruthless but brilliant visionary.
Glitch
Neutral
An information broker and tech wizard who operates out of a cluttered black-market electronics stall in the Neon Bazaar. Glitch can crack almost any pre-Fracture encryption and has a network of informants and data-taps across the lower city. No one knows their real name or past, but they are the go-to source for information on the Changed community and the city's underbelly.
Lilith Thorne
Neutral
The only child of the powerful Elias Thorne, Lilith was raised in a gilded cage. Believed to be a kidnapping victim, she actually orchestrated her own disappearance to escape her father's suffocating control and his sinister corporate ambitions. She is an idealist who sympathizes with the plight of the Changed, but her naivety about the true dangers of the lower city makes her vulnerable.
⚡ Key Events (7)
A Case in the Ash-Rain
The story begins in Kael's dimly lit office as acidic rain streaks the window. A wealthy, powerful man named Elias Thorne arrives, a stark figure of wealth amidst the decay. He explains that his daughter, Lilith, has vanished from their secure penthouse in the Spire. He offers a substantial number of credits for her safe return, believing a 'Changed' or a Maw-beast is responsible. The event concludes with the player having to decide: take the case and the money, or tell Thorne to get lost.
The Gilded Cage
Kael gets access to the Thorne penthouse in the Spire, a sterile, opulent world away from the grime below. The player can investigate Lilith's pristine, luxurious room for clues. The room feels sterile, almost too perfect, but using Kael's 'Echo Sense' will reveal the truth. A powerful Echo of defiance, fear, and desperate hope clings to a data-slate hidden under her bed, suggesting she wasn't kidnapped, but ran away.
Whispers in the Wires
The data-slate found in Lilith's room is encrypted with a complex, non-standard algorithm. The only person Kael knows who can crack it is his informant, Glitch. This event requires the player to travel to the Neon Bazaar, a dangerous and chaotic black market, to find Glitch. They must navigate the crowds and avoid the attention of local gangs or corrupt corporate enforcers.
Down the Rabbit Hole
The decrypted data-slate leads to a maintenance hatch in a forgotten corner of the lower Warrens. The air that rises from it is stale and cold. This is the entrance to the Abandoned Subway Tunnels, a place off any official map, a descent into a darkness where Spire authority means nothing. The path is treacherous, with risks of structural collapse and the unsettling feeling of being watched.
The Sanctuary
Deep within the tunnels, Kael discovers a hidden settlement. Old subway cars have been converted into homes, powered by a geothermal vent and illuminated by glowing Glimmer Moss. This is The Sanctuary, a haven for a community of Changed. Here, Kael finds Lilith Thorne, not as a captive, but as a respected guest, learning from the community's leader.
Maw-Beast in the Tunnels
The tense confrontation between Kael, Lilith, and the community's leader creates a spike of fear and anger. The negative emotional energy acts as a beacon in the dark, attracting an unwanted visitor. A high-pitched scream echoes from down the tunnel, and a Shrieker, a fast and vicious Maw-beast, attacks the settlement's perimeter.
The Thorne Legacy
After the Maw-beast attack, a shaken but resolute Lilith shows Kael what she stole from her father's private servers: proof that Aether-Gen is not just a utility company. They are capturing 'Changed' from the Warrens and conducting horrific experiments, trying to weaponize Rift Energy. She didn't just run away; she's trying to start a revolution.
