Echoes in the Silence
The world ended not with a bang, but with a horrifying hush. Monstrous creatures called 'Hushers' now hunt by sound, and the few remaining survivors cling to a fragile existence. Some, like the protagonist, have developed a strange psychic power called an 'Echo'—a gift that might be the key to survival, but also a beacon that calls the monsters. In this desolate world, can one find connection, trust, and maybe even love, or will the silence claim everyone?

📖 Story Backstory
The introduction and setting of the world, including its history.
It has been two years since 'The Silence,' a mysterious global event that wiped out most of humanity and gave rise to the 'Hushers'—blind, terrifying creatures that hunt with hypersensitive hearing. Survivors live in small, isolated pockets, communicating through whispers and sign language. A small percentage of survivors have developed psionic abilities known as 'Echoes.' These powers vary, from telepathic suggestion to psychic shields, but all come with a terrible price.
👥 Characters (4)
Characters in this story. You will choose who to play as when you start.
Alex
Protagonist
Alex survived The Silence by sheer luck and has been living alone for months. They have recently discovered a nascent 'Echo' power, an ability they neither understand nor control. This power manifests as uncontrolled flashes of psychic perception, which is both a potential tool and a terrifying liability.
Kaelen
A powerful and experienced Echo user, Kaelen has learned to control his abilities with precision. He is a natural protector, but is haunted by the loss of his previous group, an event he blames on his own powers. This has made him deeply cautious about forming new attachments.
Lena
Lena is a pure survivalist who trusts only in tangible skills and proven tactics. She has a deep-seated hatred and fear of Echo powers, which she views as an unpredictable and unacceptable liability. She believes silence and stealth are the only ways to survive, and anything that compromises that is a threat.
Elias
Neutral
A former professor of anthropology and linguistics, Elias survived The Silence by being in the right place at the right time: his isolated, well-stocked hilltop observatory. He has since dedicated his life to studying the new world, meticulously documenting the Hushers' behavior, the nature of Echoes, and the strange phenomena that have arisen. He is a well of knowledge but is physically weak and terrified of leaving his sanctuary.
⚡ Key Events (7)
The Empty Library
The protagonist, Alex, is hiding in the dusty, cavernous remains of a public library. Hunger gnaws at their stomach. Outside, the rhythmic, wet clicking of a Husher's claws on pavement echoes through the silence. As desperation mounts, a strange pressure builds behind Alex's eyes—their Echo—and a faint, shimmering vision of a sealed emergency-aid box in the pharmacy across the street flashes through their mind. At the same moment, the clicking outside stops, as if the creature has sensed something.
A Voice in the Static
After making a desperate dash for the pharmacy, Alex manages to grab the supplies but finds their exit blocked by the Husher. As the creature closes in, a new sensation cuts through Alex's fear—a calm, focused thought that is not their own, like a clear voice in a storm of static. 'Get down. Don't make a sound.' A moment later, a glass bottle shatters down the street, and the Husher, drawn by the loud noise, immediately changes course and scrambles toward the sound. A figure emerges from the shadows of an alleyway—Kaelen.
The Skeptic's Welcome
Upon arriving at Kaelen's fortified workshop, the relative safety is shattered by a hostile welcome. Lena, crossbow raised, confronts Alex immediately. She grills them about their skills and, upon learning they are an untrained Echo user, her face hardens. She makes her opinion clear: Alex is a danger, a 'psychic noisemaker' that will get them all killed. Kaelen tries to mediate, but the tension is thick enough to cut with a knife.
The First Lesson
Kaelen takes Alex to a secluded, sound-proofed room in the workshop. He explains the basics of Echo control: that it is not about power, but about focus and willpower. 'Your mind is a bell,' he explains in a low voice, 'and you've been letting it ring wildly. You must learn to muffle it, to strike it only when you mean to.' The lesson involves a series of mental exercises designed to quiet the mind and focus psychic energy.
A Scavenging Run Gone Wrong
Lena, needing an extra pair of hands, reluctantly allows Alex to join her on a scavenging run to a derelict clinic. The building is a maze of overturned furniture and debris. Halfway through, a rotted floorboard gives way with a loud CRACK. The sound echoes through the building, and moments later, the tell-tale clicking of multiple Hushers converges on their position. They are trapped.
The Whispering Tower
While tinkering with an old shortwave radio, the group picks up a faint, repeating signal—not a voice, but a structured, digital burst. It's heavily degraded, but it's unmistakably artificial. Kaelen triangulates the source: a decommissioned radio relay tower on a ridge several miles away. It could be a pre-Silence automated signal, or it could be other survivors. It's the first sign of the wider world they've had in years.
The Scholar on the Hill
While scouting the area, a glint of light from a lens catches the eye. It comes from the old observatory on the hill, a place long thought abandoned. A closer, careful look reveals signs of life: a makeshift barricade, a small, well-tended garden, and the silhouette of a figure watching the horizon through a large telescope. The place is occupied.
