📖 Story Backstory
The introduction and setting of the world, including its history.
A century ago, the 'Resonance Cascade' shattered Veridia's reality. This event created Echoes—pockets of altered physics and temporal distortions—and left behind 'Chroma', a crystallized energy source that can manipulate them. Society has rebuilt itself around scavenging old-world tech and harvesting Chroma. The largest city, 'Nexus', is a neon-drenched casino metropolis run by powerful syndicates who control the Chroma trade. Outside Nexus are desolate wastes peppered with scavenger towns and stalked by 'Glimmer-Phantoms', creatures born from unstable Echoes.

Jinx
Protagonist
A pragmatic scavenger and gambler trying to survive in the wastes. Jinx possesses a unique, innate sensitivity to Chroma, which they don't fully understand, making them both a talented gambler and a target for those who would exploit their gift.
Anya
Neutral
A brilliant but disgraced scholar from Nexus, now an outcast living in the wastes. She is an expert on pre-Cascade technology and the theoretical applications of Chroma, but a failed experiment led to her exile. She seeks to undo the damage she caused.
Silas 'The House'
Neutral
The owner and operator of the 'Last Chance' saloon. Silas is a former high-roller from Nexus who retired to the wastes for reasons he refuses to share. He acts as a gatekeeper of secrets and an arbiter of the outpost's unwritten laws.
Kael
Neutral
A ruthlessly efficient and ambitious scavenger who operates in the wastes around Rust-Haven. Kael views survival as a zero-sum game. He isn't malicious, but he is fiercely competitive and believes that any good find belongs to the person who can take and hold it. He sees Jinx not as an enemy, but as his primary rival for the best salvage.
⚡ Key Events (7)
The Lost Ante
The story opens in the dim light of the 'Last Chance' saloon. Jinx has just lost a game of Echo Hold'em to the bar's imposing owner, Silas. The final bet wasn't for Chroma, but for a memory. As Silas claims his prize, a cold void opens in Jinx's mind—a memory of a person, a place, or a promise, now gone. Silas offers only a cryptic warning: 'Some chips are too valuable to place on the table.' The player must now decide how to proceed from this violation.
A Glimmer in the Dark
Shortly after the game with Silas, an unearthly shriek echoes through Rust-Haven. A Glimmer-Phantom, drawn by a recent Chroma discovery, phases through the outpost's walls. The creature is a vortex of shimmering light and shadow, its presence causing reality to warp around it. During the chaos, Anya uses a strange device to analyze the phantom, shouting its weakness to Jinx. This event serves as a practical introduction to combat and the dangers of the world.
The Scholar's Gambit
Impressed by Jinx's ability to survive the Glimmer-Phantom attack, Anya approaches with a proposition. She reveals the location of a sealed, pre-Cascade data archive that may contain information on advanced Chroma manipulation—and potentially, a way to restore a lost memory. She needs an escort through the dangerous Glass-Scar Plains to reach it. In exchange for safe passage, she will share her findings.
Rival's Claim
While scavenging the wreckage of a pre-Cascade convoy, Jinx discovers a sealed cargo container with a high-energy signature. Just as they begin to open it, Kael appears, claiming he tracked it first. He challenges Jinx for the right to the salvage—a quickdraw duel, a game of chance, or a race to disable the container's security. The choice of contest and its outcome will define their rivalry.
Entering Nexus
The first sight of Nexus is a shock to the system. Towering, neon-lit casinos pierce the dusty sky, built on and around the husks of pre-Cascade skyscrapers. The streets are a throng of gamblers, syndicate enforcers, merchants, and desperate souls, all bathed in the electric glow. The air hums with energy, a stark contrast to the quiet desolation of the wastes. The sheer scale and power of the city, controlled by the syndicates, is overwhelming.
The Phantom's Pull
The accumulated Chroma carried by Jinx acts like a beacon. One night, the air grows cold and reality begins to fray at the edges. A particularly large and ancient Glimmer-Phantom, drawn by the 'Law of Resonance', materializes. It is more defined and aggressive than others, its form a swirling vortex of fractured timelines and raw energy. This is not a random encounter; it is a hunt.
The Sunken Treasure
An old scavenger's map, bought or found, points to an area of the wastes once known as the Azure Basin. Now a treacherous salt flat, the map hints at the entrance to a 'Sunken City', a pre-Cascade district that collapsed into a massive sinkhole. It is said to be an untouched treasure trove of old-world tech, but also flooded with unstable Echoes and forgotten security systems.
