📖 Story Backstory
The introduction and setting of the world, including its history.
The year is 2242. The galaxy is reeling from the devastating Corporate Wars, a conflict that blurred the lines between soldier and citizen. Many, disillusioned and weary, seek refuge in the Outer Colonies. The transport ship 'Odyssey' was one such vessel of hope, carrying veterans, scientists, and families to a promised new life. It never arrived. An unexplained system failure sent a cascade of dropships plummeting towards the uncharted jungle planet of Xylos. Xylos is a world teeming with life, dominated by a complex insectoid ecosystem. These creatures are not a mindless swarm; they are connected by the 'Hive Song,' a powerful psychic field that permeates the planet. This 'Song' allows the Hive to communicate, coordinate, and even influence the planet's flora and fauna. For outsiders, prolonged exposure can be disorienting, leading to vivid hallucinations or even a complete loss of self as their thoughts are slowly assimilated by the Hive.
👥 Characters (4)
Characters in this story. You will choose who to play as when you start.
Roric
Protagonist
A disillusioned veteran of the Corporate Wars, Roric sought passage on the 'Odyssey' to escape a life defined by conflict. Cynical and pragmatic, they are a natural survivor but struggle to trust others. Roric's primary motivation is to find a semblance of peace and personal freedom, far from the echoes of war and the rigid chains of command.
Dr. Aris Thorne
Neutral
A brilliant but naive xeno-biologist, Aris was obsessed with the theoretical possibility of non-individualistic intelligence. The crash on Xylos is, for him, a terrifying but exhilarating opportunity. He views the Hive not as a monster, but as the scientific discovery of a lifetime, and he is driven to understand it, not destroy it. His secret is that he may have rerouted the 'Odyssey's' flight path towards an anomaly that turned out to be Xylos, making him indirectly responsible for the crash.
Juno
Neutral
A former corporate intelligence operative who specialized in asset extraction from hostile environments. Juno was a passenger on the 'Odyssey' under a false identity, on the run after a mission went wrong. She is ruthlessly pragmatic, viewing survival as a zero-sum game. Her motivation is to get off Xylos and disappear permanently, and she secretly has a hidden cache of advanced gear stashed away from the main crash site.
Kaelen
Neutral
A junior systems engineer aboard the 'Odyssey', Kaelen is brilliant with machines but hopelessly out of his element in the wilderness. He's a fish out of water, accustomed to sterile engine rooms, not humid jungles. His primary motivation is purely practical: fix what's broken, build something that works, and find a way to send a distress signal. He feels a deep sense of responsibility for the ship's failure, even if it wasn't his fault.
⚡ Key Events (7)
The Crash
The player character, Roric, awakens in the mangled wreckage of the 'Sparrow-7' dropship. The immediate environment is a chaotic mess of sparking wires, broken consoles, and the encroaching alien jungle. The first objective is to get free and assess the situation. The air is breathable, but filled with strange scents. A quick survey reveals the dropship is split in two. The event ends as Roric hears an unfamiliar, multi-limbed skittering sound approaching from the dense foliage just outside the hull breach, forcing a choice: investigate the noise, try to find a weapon, or barricade the opening?
First Contact
Venturing out from the dropship, the survivors come face-to-face with the native life. The first creatures encountered are 'Scuttlers,' dog-sized insectoids that move in coordinated packs. They are curious but wary, their antennae twitching as they emit soft clicks. This encounter introduces the basic behavior of the insectoids and serves as a tutorial for combat or evasion. During this event, the survivors find Dr. Aris Thorne, who is dangerously close to the Scuttlers, trying to analyze them with his scanner.
The Hive Song
While exploring, the group discovers a small clearing dominated by a strange, bioluminescent, fungal-like tree that pulses with a soft light and a low, resonant hum. Aris identifies it as a 'Nexus Node,' a key component of the Hive's psychic network. As the group draws near, they are all exposed to the 'Hive Song' for the first time. Roric experiences a fleeting, disorienting vision—a memory from the war, but twisted, seen through a thousand compound eyes. The experience leaves them shaken and their Sanity slightly frayed.
The Scavenge
With the immediate area secured, the survivors must face a pressing reality: their supplies are critically low. The two halves of the crashed 'Sparrow-7' dropship are a potential treasure trove of food rations, medical supplies, tools, and salvageable parts. However, the wreckage is unstable and filled with hazards like sparking wires and leaking fuel lines. Furthermore, the noise of their scavenging could attract unwanted attention from the jungle's inhabitants.
Whispers in the Dark
As night falls, the jungle transforms. Bioluminescent fungi cast an eerie glow, and the air fills with a cacophony of alien sounds. The Hive Song grows stronger in the darkness, preying on frayed nerves. One of the survivors, their mind weakened by stress and exposure, experiences a powerful hallucination. They might see a figure from their past beckoning them into the trees, or hear the urgent whispers of a rescue team that isn't there. The others must intervene before the character wanders off into danger or succumbs to paranoia.
Crystal Creek
Dehydration is becoming a serious concern. The group's search for a reliable water source leads them to a small creek where the water flows over strange, crystalline formations. The water is clear and cool, but Aris insists on testing it before anyone drinks. His scanner reveals the water is pure, but the crystals are resonating faintly with the Hive Song, acting as natural psychic dampeners. The area around the creek offers a small pocket of mental clarity and relative peace.
Echoes of the Spire
From a high ridge, the survivors get their first look at the heart of the Hive's influence: a colossal, organic spire that scrapes the sky. It appears to be made of the same chitinous material as the insectoids, interwoven with glowing fungal veins and pulsating with a visible psychic energy that ripples the air around it. Even from miles away, the psychic pressure is immense, a constant, deafening roar in the back of their minds. Juno recognizes the energy signature as similar to something from a redacted corporate file, while Aris is mesmerized by its biological grandeur. Roric just sees the ultimate threat.
