📖 Story Backstory
The introduction and setting of the world, including its history.
A century ago, the Terran Dominion spanned a dozen star systems, protected by the elite Aegis Legion. Then came the Vex, an insectoid hive-mind that swept through the galaxy. The war was brutal and short. The Vex didn't just conquer; they consumed. Earth, the cradle of humanity, is now a Vex-infested ruin. Pockets of survivors cling to existence in fortified enclaves, scavenging the bones of their lost civilization. The player is a former Aegis Legionnaire, haunted by the final battles and now struggling to protect their small community, Bastion-7.
👥 Characters (4)
Characters in this story. You will choose who to play as when you start.
Kaelen
Protagonist
A former Legionnaire of the Aegis Legion, Kaelen is one of the few veterans of the Fall who survived. Haunted by the collapse of human civilization, they now serve as a key protector and scout for the survivor enclave of Bastion-7. Their military training makes them an invaluable asset, but the weight of their past losses fuels a grim and sometimes reckless determination.
Anya Sharma
Neutral
The lead (and only) technician for Bastion-7. Anya keeps the enclave's life support, water purifiers, and defenses from collapsing. She is a pragmatist who sees the fight against the Vex as a futile effort to delay the inevitable. She believes humanity's only path to freedom is to escape Earth entirely, a view that puts her at odds with the more militant members of the community.
Joric
Neutral
Born after the Fall, Joric has only known a world of ruin. He grew up on stories of the Aegis Legion's heroism and idolizes veterans like Kaelen. He is a zealous and brave warrior, fiercely dedicated to the cause of reclaiming Earth from the Vex. He views any talk of retreat or compromise as a betrayal of humanity's legacy.
Councilor Valerius
Neutral
Valerius was a mid-level bureaucrat in the Terran Dominion's planetary government before the Fall. He survived by being pragmatic and ruthless, trading favors and information to secure a place in the fledgling Bastion-7. Now, as the head of the enclave's three-person civilian council, he represents order, law, and continuity with the past. He sees the military remnants like Kaelen as necessary but dangerous tools, to be managed and directed, not followed.
⚡ Key Events (7)
The Scavenge
Kaelen's squad, including Joric, has successfully located a cache of pre-Fall medical supplies in the ruins of Aethelburg Prime. As they prepare to extract, they are ambushed by a pack of Vex Skitterlings. In the chaotic firefight, Joric is wounded and dragged away by a Vex Drone, his cries for help echoing in the rubble. The player is faced with an immediate, terrible choice.
Return to the Bastion
The player returns to the relative safety of Bastion-7. The reception they receive depends entirely on the outcome of the scavenge. Anya Sharma immediately confronts them, either about damaged gear or the futility of the mission. The player must then report to the enclave's three-person council to account for their actions and deliver any recovered assets.
Whispers in the Static
Anya, after analyzing the energy signature from the Gray Zone, manages to decrypt a small part of the signal. It's an automated, repeating emergency beacon using old Aegis Legion encryption—a signal that should be impossible. It could be a sign of other organized survivors, a pre-Fall automated system, or a sophisticated Vex trap.
The Gray Zone Expedition
Following the council's approval (or against their wishes), Kaelen forms an expedition to investigate the mysterious Aegis beacon. The journey takes them into the 'Gray Zone,' a sector of the city so thoroughly infested by the Vex that it has begun to change physically, with alien biomass choking the crumbling concrete structures. The air is thick with spores, and the constant, low-level psychic hum of the hive is palpable.
The Ghost Ship
The expedition tracks the beacon to its source: the crash site of the Aegis frigate 'Vigilance,' half-buried in a collapsed skyscraper. The ship's emergency power is active, powering the automated beacon. The vessel is eerily silent, a ghost ship from a lost era. The main objective is to reach the bridge or engineering to access the ship's logs and discover why it crashed here and what its mission was.
Synapse Encounter
Deep within the 'Vigilance' (or in the Gray Zone), the squad corners a unique Vex form. It's larger than a skitterling, with a pulsating, oversized cranium and delicate tendrils extending from its mandibles. As it corners a survivor, it doesn't attack to kill, but to envelop their head with its tendrils. This is a Synapse Drone, and the squad witnesses its assimilation process firsthand, forcing a horrific choice in line with Aegis protocol.
Anya's Gambit
If Kaelen has earned her trust, Anya pulls them aside into her private, hidden workshop. She reveals her secret project: a mostly-intact pre-Fall orbital shuttle. She believes it's the only real hope for humanity. However, its flight computer is fried, and its power core is missing a critical component—a 'Quantum Entanglement Comms Relay.' She has tracked one such device to the bridge of the 'Vigilance.' She asks Kaelen to retrieve it for her, in secret.
