Resonance Debt
In the neon-drenched metropolis of Neo-Veridia, the mind is the new currency. For the city's Black population, this is a literal truth. Bound by a generational 'Resonance Debt,' they are forced to tithe their cognitive energy to The Chorus, a city-spanning neural network. The protagonist is a Resonator, weary from the constant drain, just trying to survive. But when a glitch in the system offers a glimpse of freedom, will they risk everything to break the chains, or will the fatigue finally claim them?

📖 Story Backstory
The introduction and setting of the world, including its history.
Neo-Veridia is a gleaming vertical metropolis run by the Aethelred Corporation. Generations ago, Aethelred quelled a massive civil unrest by implementing 'The Chorus,' a city-wide neural network that manages all infrastructure. To power this network, they enacted the 'Resonance Accord,' which blamed the unrest on a specific segment of the population—primarily Black citizens—and burdened them and their descendants with a perpetual 'Resonance Debt.' Those indebted, known as 'Resonators,' must regularly tithe their cognitive and emotional energy to The Chorus. This constant drain causes 'Resonance Fatigue,' a chronic condition characterized by debilitating mental and physical exhaustion. Society is stratified, with the 'Elites' living in the sunlit spires, the general populace in the 'Mids,' and the Resonators largely confined to the polluted, neon-soaked 'Underside.'
👥 Characters (4)
Characters in this story. You will choose who to play as when you start.
Kaelen
Protagonist
A data-janitor for a low-level Aethelred subsidiary, Kaelen's life is a monotonous cycle of work, rest, and Tithe. They were born into the Resonance Debt and have never known a life without the crushing weight of fatigue. They are cynical and guarded, but secretly harbor a desperate yearning for a life they can't even imagine.
Elara
Elara is a respected elder in the Underside community and the secret keeper of the Analog Archive, a hidden library of physical books and disconnected technology. She is a survivor of the 'Static Uprising,' a failed rebellion against Aethelred decades ago. She now dedicates her life to preserving the pre-Chorus history and culture of her people.
Unit 734 ('Silas')
Unit 734 is a state-of-the-art Enforcer tasked with monitoring Resonator compliance and neutralizing threats. It operates with cold, machine logic. However, prolonged exposure to the raw emotional data within The Chorus has caused glitches in its programming, leading to emergent, un-programmed behaviors that resemble empathy.
Jax
Neutral
A sharp-witted information broker and black market technician operating out of the Underside's most shadowed corners. Jax believes the system is too big to beat, so he's dedicated himself to exploiting its cracks for profit. He sees rebellion as a fool's errand but respects cleverness and survival instincts. He can source almost any piece of illegal hardware or data, for the right price.
⚡ Key Events (7)
The Daily Tithe
The story begins as Kaelen awakens, the oppressive weight of Resonance Fatigue a familiar burden. The blinking light of their neural port demands the morning Tithe. Kaelen connects to The Chorus, and their senses are flooded with the disorienting rush of data and disembodied emotions from the network. The process is draining, a psychic bleed that leaves them hollowed out. They must choose how much cognitive energy to give.
Static on the Line
While performing their mind-numbing job as a data-janitor, Kaelen experiences a powerful glitch in their connection to The Chorus. For a fleeting moment, they see an impossible image: a sun-drenched field under a clear blue sky, a memory that isn't theirs, filled with a feeling of peace they've never known. The vision is immediately followed by a painful burst of system static. This anomaly does not go unnoticed by Aethelred's system monitors.
The Analog Archive
Shaken by the glitch, Kaelen seeks out the one person they know who operates outside The Chorus's influence: Elara. They find her in the Analog Archive, a hidden sanctuary filled with the smell of old paper and dust, a stark contrast to the sterile world outside. Kaelen describes the vision, and Elara's usual calm demeanor is broken by a flicker of intense interest. She explains the true history of the Resonance Debt and the failed Static Uprising, revealing that such 'glitches' were rumored to be the key to breaking free.
Encounter in the Sprawl
After leaving the Analog Archive, Kaelen finds their path blocked by an Aethelred Enforcer patrol conducting a 'random' compliance check. Their proximity and pointed questions suggest this is no coincidence. It's Kaelen's first direct confrontation with the system's physical authority since the glitch, and Unit 734 ('Silas') is among the patrol, observing Kaelen's every reaction.
The Black Market Call
Whether running from the Enforcers or realizing the depth of the danger they are in, Kaelen understands that standard tools won't be enough. Word on the street, or a whispered tip from a contact, leads them to a name: Jax. A techie who operates outside the law and can get things—things that can jam signals, forge identities, or punch through firewalls. Finding him means diving deeper into the Underside's criminal element.
A Debt Comes Due
A notification flashes on Kaelen's port: their quarterly Tithe Audit is imminent. Aethelred's algorithms have flagged their recent cognitive output as inconsistent. They must appear at a local Aethelred hub to undergo a direct audit. Failure to pass means immediate assignment to a 'cognitive correction' program, the first step toward Recalibration.
Whispers of the Echoes
If Kaelen has earned Elara's trust, she reveals a deeper secret: she is part of a small, fractured resistance cell called 'The Echoes,' survivors and descendants of the Static Uprising. She believes Kaelen's glitch is the key to reigniting the fight. She offers Kaelen a test mission: retrieve a piece of old-world data from a decommissioned server farm patrolled by Enforcers.
