📖 Story Backstory
The introduction and setting of the world, including its history.
The year is 1943. Paris is under German occupation. The French Resistance, known as the Maquis, wages a shadow war of sabotage and intelligence, but the Gestapo's grip is tightening. Beneath the city lies a vast, ancient labyrinth of tunnels and ossuaries: the Catacombs. While parts are known, much of the network is unmapped, unstable, and considered suicidal to navigate. It is a place of the dead, holding the remains of millions, and a dumping ground for secrets and forgotten history.
👥 Characters (4)
Characters in this story. You will choose who to play as when you start.
Jean-Luc
Protagonist
A former history student at the Sorbonne, Jean-Luc's life was upended by the occupation. An idealist at heart, he joined the Resistance to fight for a free France, but the brutal reality of the shadow war has chipped away at his optimism. He is resourceful and knowledgeable about history, but not a natural soldier, driven more by conviction than by courage.
Elodie
Neutral
A black marketeer who thrived in the grey spaces of occupied Paris. Elodie knows the city's underbelly, including parts of the catacombs, which she used as smuggling routes. She is fiercely independent, trusts no one, and her morality is flexible, always prioritizing her own survival and the well-being of her hidden family above.
Klaus
Neutral
A German soldier who deserted his post. Fed up with the war and horrified by the atrocities he was forced to witness on the Eastern Front, he fled his barracks and sought refuge in the catacombs, hoping to wait out the war. He is terrified of being found by his former comrades, especially the SS.
Antoine
Neutral
A former city surveyor who, after a personal tragedy, became obsessed with the catacombs and abandoned the surface world years before the war. He sees the labyrinth not as a tomb, but as a living entity. He is a 'cataphile' of the highest order, possessing an unparalleled knowledge of the deep, unmapped tunnels. His long isolation has, however, eroded his sanity, making him unpredictable and dangerous.
⚡ Key Events (7)
The Collapse
The story begins. The protagonist, Jean-Luc, flees a Gestapo raid and escapes into the Paris Catacombs. An explosion seals the entrance, trapping him inside. He is wounded, has minimal supplies, and the darkness is absolute. The mysterious 'system' makes its first appearance, assessing his status and giving him the objective: Survive. The player's first choice is presented.
A Glimmer in the Dark
After navigating the initial tunnels, a faint, flickering light can be seen in the distance. Following it leads to a small, defensible alcove where Elodie has made a temporary camp. She is armed and wary, immediately viewing the protagonist as a threat to her resources. She is not overtly hostile, but makes it clear that her survival comes first.
Echoes of the Hunt
While exploring, the player discovers fresh boot prints and a discarded German cigarette packet. The 'system' warns of an active 'Threat Proximity'. It becomes clear that a Wehrmacht or Gestapo patrol is searching the upper levels of the catacombs, possibly looking for the source of the explosion or for the protagonist himself. Their voices can be heard echoing from a passage above.
The Whimpering German
Faint, pathetic sounds of pain lead to a collapsed side tunnel. Pinned under rubble is Klaus, the young German deserter. He is wounded, terrified, and initially hostile, fearing the protagonist is there to capture or kill him. He begs for his life in a mix of broken French and panicked German.
Whispers of the Dead
As sanity frays, the background noise of the catacombs begins to take on a sinister edge. The dripping water sounds like whispers, and the shadows seem to writhe with movement. Jean-Luc sees fleeting images in his peripheral vision—faces in the bone walls, figures from his past, victims of the raid he escaped. The 'system' feed becomes corrupted with intrusive, nonsensical data.
The King of Bones
In a vast chamber where femurs and skulls are arranged in elaborate, artistic patterns, the protagonist is confronted by Antoine. He emerges from the shadows, not as an attacker, but as a bizarre host. He speaks in riddles, offering cryptic advice and judging whether Jean-Luc is 'worthy' of passing through his 'kingdom'.
The Cistern
After days of thirst and drinking foul-tasting water, a passage opens into a cavern containing a pre-Roman cistern. The water here is deep, cold, and miraculously clean. However, the area is eerily silent, and the smooth, mossy stones around the pool are dangerously slick. Strange scratch marks line the cistern walls just above the water line.
