📖 Story Backstory
The introduction and setting of the world, including its history.
The world is a single, massive grimoire known as the Last Folio. It was intended to be a collection of every story ever told, but its creator vanished, leaving it unfinished. Without a guiding hand, the stories within began to rot, their characters turning into monstrous versions of themselves, their settings collapsing into a chaotic, dungeon-like labyrinth of interconnected pages. The very ink bleeds and runs, corrupting everything it touches. Survival depends on navigating these lethal narratives, scavenging the raw concepts of story—like 'Courage,' 'Vellum,' and 'Gilded Ink'—to craft weapons, build shelters, and push back against the encroaching 'Blank,' a force of nothingness that consumes pages and everything on them.
👥 Characters (4)
Characters in this story. You will choose who to play as when you start.
Elara
Protagonist
A cynical and pragmatic apprentice archivist, Elara was cataloging a forbidden collection when she was accidentally pulled into the Last Folio. She is not a hero or a warrior; her strengths are her sharp intellect and her deep knowledge of stories, which she must now adapt for survival. Her primary motivation is to escape the book and return to her quiet, predictable life, but the Folio's narrative pressures may force her to become someone else entirely.
The Tin Knight
Neutral
A character from a lost tale of chivalry, the Tin Knight was a guardian of a long-forgotten princess. When his story rotted, he lost his purpose and his heart, leaving him an empty shell bound by the fragmented remnants of his code. He wanders the pages of the Folio, searching for a new purpose or the heart he believes will make him whole again.
Glimmer-cat
Neutral
A personification of the Folio's chaotic magic and forgotten knowledge. The Glimmer-cat is neither good nor evil; it is a trickster and a trader. It hoards rare story fragments and powerful artifacts, which it will trade for things it finds valuable: secrets, strong emotions, or 'unwritten actions'—choices that defy narrative convention.
The Scribe of Scrawls
Neutral
Once a minor, forgotten scribe in a royal court's story, she embraced the Folio's decay. She learned to wield Corrupted Ink not just as a weapon, but as a tool of creation, 'rewriting' characters and landscapes to suit her twisted vision. She sees the Folio not as a prison to escape, but a kingdom to be conquered. She is the embodiment of selfish ambition within the rules of narrative causality.
⚡ Key Events (7)
The Blank Page
The protagonist, Elara, awakens in a void of absolute darkness. A system interface materializes, explaining the basics of her condition. The prologue ends as she is presented with her first decision: investigate a single, glowing word floating in the dark, or cautiously feel her way around the edges of the unseen space she occupies. This event establishes the tone, the core survival premise, and the game-like interface.
An Inked Threat
Moving beyond the initial starting point, Elara enters a passage where the walls are carved with looping, half-finished sentences. Here, she encounters her first real threat: an 'Inkstain,' a semi-sentient blot of corrupted ink that lashes out with sharp, tendril-like appendages. This is a basic combat tutorial.
The Tin Man's Lament
Elara discovers a chamber that resembles a blacksmith's forge, though the bellows pump dust and the fire pit is cold. In the center of the room is the massive, motionless form of the Tin Knight, rusted solid. A diagnostic message flickers on his chest plate: 'MOTIVATIONAL UNIT... MISSING. LUBRICATION... CRITICAL.' To proceed further, the path is blocked by a gate too heavy for one person to lift. The knight could help, if he were active.
The Whispering Nursery
Elara finds a new 'chapter' that was once a book of nursery rhymes. The pages are water-stained, the cheerful illustrations have been warped into menacing shapes, and childish whispers echo from the shadows. Here, she might encounter corrupted versions of familiar characters, such as feral Lost Boys or a Jabberwocky Fragment.
The Glimmer-cat's Bargain
When Elara is at her lowest, weakened and cornered, the Glimmer-cat appears with its unnerving grin. It offers a powerful boon—a rare item, a path to a hidden sanctuary, or a vital piece of information. The price is never simple currency; it asks for a memory, a 'favorite word,' or for her to perform an act that dramatically contradicts her nature.
The Scribe's Mark
Elara enters a new passage to find the text on the walls writhing and rewriting itself into jagged, thorny patterns. A distant, mocking laugh echoes through the hall. This is the first sign of the Scribe of Scrawls. While the Scribe does not appear in person, she leaves her mark by transforming a previously safe or neutral area into a death trap, or by empowering a normal creature into a monstrous 'Edited' version.
The First Haven
After overcoming a significant challenge, Elara discovers a 'Margin'—a pristine, blank space between two major chapters of the Folio. This area is naturally resistant to corruption and The Blank. Here, she can establish a more permanent base of operations, a place to craft, rest, and plan without immediate threat.
