📖 Story Backstory
The introduction and setting of the world, including its history.
The setting is a seemingly infinite, subterranean labyrinth known as 'The Deeps.' It is a patchwork of rooms, tunnels, and caverns that defy normal geography. No one knows who built it, or why people find themselves here. Passages can shift and change, making mapping a near-impossible task. Resources are scarce, and the dark is home to strange, skittering creatures known as 'Dusk-crawlers' that are drawn to sound and light.
👥 Characters (4)
Characters in this story. You will choose who to play as when you start.
Elian
Protagonist
An archivist who found solace in the quiet order of books and historical records. Before waking in The Deeps, Elian was working on cataloging a collection of esoteric texts. They are motivated by a deep-seated need to understand the world around them, believing that knowledge is the ultimate tool for survival. Their greatest fear is not the dark, but the unknown.
Lena
A mechanic and amateur gardener who has been in The Deeps for much longer than Elian. She is a pragmatist, hardened by loss and the daily struggle to survive. Her primary motivation is self-preservation, but this is a shell built around a deep-seated loneliness. She secretly misses having people to care for.
Pip
A mysterious child found alone in a newly-formed passage after a Murmur event. Pip is non-verbal, communicating instead through gestures, simple drawings scratched in the dirt, and an uncanny ability to guide others. Their origin is unknown, but they possess a strange, intuitive connection to The Deeps.
Kael
Neutral
A survivor who has been in The Deeps for years, Kael has embraced a ruthless, solitary existence. He believes attachment is a weakness and that others are merely competition for scarce resources. He is an adept hunter and scavenger, but his paranoia and hostility make any interaction with him a dangerous gamble. His secret is that he was once part of a group that fell apart, a memory that fuels his cynical philosophy.
⚡ Key Events (7)
The Awakening
The story begins as the protagonist, Elian, awakens in a cold, silent cellar. The air is heavy with the smell of dust and damp earth. This introductory event establishes the atmosphere of isolation and scarcity, prompting the player to make their first move in this strange new world. The scene ends as Elian considers their immediate options.
A Wary Neighbor
After finding a way through the first door, Elian enters a slightly larger chamber. A small fire casts flickering shadows over a makeshift camp, where a woman named Lena stands guard, armed with a sharpened pipe. She is not welcoming. This event is the first social encounter, a test of diplomacy where trust must be earned, not given.
The First Murmur
Without warning, a low, resonant hum fills the air, seeming to vibrate deep within the stone. Shadows stretch into impossible shapes, and faint, indecipherable whispers echo all around. When the sound fades, a familiar passage is now a solid wall, and a new, dark tunnel has opened nearby. From within this new passage, a small figure is silhouetted: the child, Pip.
The Glimmering Grotto
Following a non-verbal cue from Pip—a drawing in the dirt or a persistent tug on the sleeve—the group discovers a hidden grotto. The cavern is breathtaking. The walls are covered in clusters of gently glowing, bioluminescent fungi, casting a soft, blue-green light. They are not just a source of light, but also edible and surprisingly nourishing.
A Voice in the Dark
While exploring a new passage, the group hears a sharp noise ahead. A figure, Kael, emerges from the shadows. He warns them away from 'his' territory, spear held at the ready. This is a tense social encounter where the group must decide how to handle a potentially hostile survivor who doesn't share their values of community.
The Collapsed Library
A Murmur reveals a section of The Deeps that was once a vast, subterranean archive. Bookshelves are toppled, and pages drift like snow, but some knowledge remains intact. This discovery is a boon for Elian, offering not just crafting schematics for new items but also fragments of lore about The Deeps itself, providing a significant boost to Hope.
The Nest
Following a narrow crevice in search of resources, the group stumbles upon a horrifying sight: a large cavern pulsating with a strange, organic webbing. Dozens of Dusk-crawlers cling to the walls and ceiling, dormant. A large, shimmering crystal—a potential power source—sits in the center of the nest. Getting it would require moving with absolute silence.
