📖 Story Backstory
The introduction and setting of the world, including its history.
No one knows what the Downward Road is or where it leads. Survivors, pulled from countless different worlds and eras, simply awaken within its depths. It is a seemingly infinite, ever-changing labyrinth of rooms, tunnels, and vast caverns, leading perpetually deeper underground. Resources are dangerously scarce, and strange, hostile creatures lurk in the shadows. Legends passed between desperate survivors speak of a 'Core' at the labyrinth's heart—a place that might offer escape, unimaginable power, or a final answer to the mystery of their prison. But the Road is jealous, and it does not give up its secrets, or its prisoners, easily.

A veteran of the Downward Road, Kaelen has been trapped for what feels like a lifetime. He is cynical and hardened by loss, trusting only his own strength and skill. He is searching for his daughter, who was taken into the labyrinth at the same time as him, though he rarely speaks of it.
Elara

The Awakening
The protagonist, Alex, awakens in a small, sealed stone cellar. The only points of interest are a floating system panel and a single iron door. This event introduces the core setting, the game-like system, and presents the player with their first choice: explore the room for hidden details or proceed through the door.
The First Encounter
Upon leaving the starting cellar, Alex enters a narrow stone corridor. A low growl echoes from the shadows ahead, and a large, aggressive Gloom Rat with matted fur and glowing red eyes emerges. It's the first creature encountered, and it's hostile.
The First Sigh
A low, deep groan reverberates through the stone, growing into a powerful tremor that shakes the entire area. Dust rains from the ceiling as the very walls seem to warp and shift. A system notification appears: 'WARNING: The Labyrinth is sighing. Reality is unstable.' When the shaking stops, the layout of the corridors has changed.
A Fellow Traveler
Ahead, the flicker of a small campfire illuminates a small cavern alcove. A figure is huddled by the fire, tending to their gear. It could be the gruff veteran Kaelen or the curious tinkerer Elara. They have spotted Alex's approach.
The Whispering Fissure
The protagonist discovers a deep, jagged fissure in the floor of a cavern, plunging into absolute darkness. A strange, cold draft rises from it, carrying with it faint, overlapping whispers in a language that is almost, but not quite, understood. The sound is unsettling and seems to promise secrets while eroding one's sanity.
Silas's Shady Stall
In a wider-than-usual section of tunnel, a collection of strange artifacts are laid out on a grimy canvas, lit by the eerie glow of a captured will-o'-wisp in a jar. A gaunt figure in a patchwork cloak, Silas, beckons from the shadows, offering a smile that doesn't reach his large, dark eyes. He offers to trade 'rarities for rarities.'
The Nest
A damp, foul-smelling cavern is discovered, its walls and floor covered in chewed bones and shredded scraps of cloth. The air is filled with chittering sounds. This is a nest for Gloom Rats, and it is teeming with them. In the center of the cavern, a pile of scavenged junk glitters, promising valuable materials for anyone brave or foolish enough to clear out the vermin.
