📖 Story Backstory
The introduction and setting of the world, including its history.
The world is known as the Under-root, a vast and seemingly endless network of caverns, tunnels, and forgotten ruins that sprawl beneath the Great Whisperwood. This is not a natural place. It is a semi-sentient dimension, a 'narrative underworld' that physically manifests the forgotten, suppressed, or distorted tales from the world above. Every creature, every resource, and every crumbling structure is an echo of a story that has lost its meaning. This core principle is known as 'The Echo of Tales.' As such, the Under-root is a place of archetypes and symbols, but twisted and made monstrous by neglect and darkness. It is a place of extreme scarcity, where light and clean water are treasures, and survival is a constant, brutal struggle.
👥 Characters (4)
Characters in this story. You will choose who to play as when you start.
Kaelen
Protagonist
A village tinker by trade, Kaelen fell into the Under-root through a sudden sinkhole while traveling. They are not a hero or a warrior, but a pragmatist and an inventor, driven by a desperate will to return to the sunlit world. Their knowledge of mechanisms and materials is their greatest asset in this nightmare realm.
Grol
Neutral
A former knight of a forgotten order, Grol has been trapped in the Under-root for decades. The idealism he once held has been eroded away by endless struggle, leaving a core of pure, cynical pragmatism. He is the apex predator of his territory and views any newcomer as either a threat, a tool, or a future meal.
Spore-Dreamer
Neutral
An ancient, native being of the Under-root, the Spore-Dreamer is less a person and more a sentient ecosystem. It is a mystery, a remnant of a story so old it has no counterpart on the surface. It communicates not with words, but by releasing spores that induce vivid, symbolic, and often frightening visions in those who inhale them.
The Weaver
Neutral
A collector of narrative fragments, The Weaver exists to gather, mend, and trade the lost tales of the Under-root. It is an echo of every storyteller, librarian, and archivist who ever lived, given form in the darkness. It seeks 'Resonant Shards'—crystallized moments of powerful emotion or meaning—and trades rare items, information, and even pathways through the Under-root for them.
⚡ Key Events (7)
The Awakening
The protagonist awakens in utter darkness, their body aching with hunger and thirst. A strange, glowing mark on their hand reveals itself to be a 'Soul-Tether,' a system showing their dire physical state. Before them, two tunnels offer the first desperate choice: follow the sound of dripping water or the strange, sweet smell of the unknown.
First Light, First Threat
Following their choice, the protagonist finds a meager resource—a trickle of black water, a patch of glowing moss. But the act of securing it attracts attention. A territorial creature, a twisted echo of a forgotten tale, reveals itself. It might be a Snapper-Vine, a predatory plant disguised as a normal root, or a swarm of Glimmer-Moths, beautiful but drawn to any light with aggressive hunger.
A Voice in the Spores
Drawn by a faint, pulsing glow, the protagonist discovers a hidden grotto, warm and filled with a soft light emanating from giant, otherworldly mushrooms. Here they encounter the Spore-Dreamer. As they approach, the creature releases a cloud of shimmering spores, and a vision floods the protagonist's mind: a flash of a heavily fortified camp, a grizzled man (Grol) fighting a hulking shadow-beast, and the feeling of immense danger and potential opportunity.
The Toll of the Barricade
Following the vision from the Spore-Dreamer, the protagonist locates Grol's fortified camp, The Barricade. Grol is hostile and suspicious, demanding a 'toll' for passage or information. He might demand a rare resource, the completion of a dangerous task (like luring his prey), or a demonstration of strength. Refusal is met with aggression.
Whispers in the Dark
As Sanity frays, the darkness begins to feel alive. Whispers coil at the edge of hearing, promising escape, food, or shortcuts—all for a small price. Shadows flicker in the periphery, taking on familiar shapes before dissolving. The world itself seems to mock the protagonist's struggle.
A Light Against the Gloom
The oppressive darkness is a constant drain on spirit and safety. The protagonist realizes that a reliable, portable light source is not a luxury but a necessity. By combining a sturdy branch with flammable moss and a spark from flint, a crude torch can be fashioned, pushing back the gloom for the first time.
The Forgotten Lullaby
In a quiet, overlooked corner of a cavern, a child's rattle made of polished river stones lies half-buried in the dirt. Picking it up fills the protagonist's mind with the faint, spectral sound of a lullaby and the feeling of immense, forgotten love. The object feels warm to the touch, a tiny anchor of warmth in the cold dark.
