📖 Story Backstory
The introduction and setting of the world, including its history.
The world of Aerthos was once watched over by colossal beings known as the Progenitors. These were not gods of worship, but living cornerstones of reality. Ages ago, in an event no mortal record survived, the First Progenitor died. Its corpse, vast as a mountain range, was buried by the others deep beneath the earth's crust in a tomb of their own making—the Sepulcher. In the millennia since, the Progenitor's divine essence has decayed, seeping into the stone and crystallizing into a substance known as 'God's-Blood'. This substance is a source of immense power, but it is also a psychic poison, saturated with the dying thoughts and memories of the dead god. Recently, a geological cataclysm shattered the surface world, plunging entire regions into the lightless depths and cracking open the seal to the Sepulcher. The player is one such unfortunate soul, now trapped in the crumbling, hostile tomb of a dead god.
👥 Characters (4)
Characters in this story. You will choose who to play as when you start.
Aeron
Protagonist
Aeron was a cartographer's apprentice, someone whose life was defined by maps, meticulous measurements, and the quiet pursuit of knowledge. They are pragmatic and resourceful, not a hero or a warrior, but a survivor by necessity. Their primary motivation is simple: to endure, to understand this new, terrible reality, and perhaps find a way back to the sunlit world.
Kaelen
Neutral
A former guard of a now-extinct temple order, Kaelen was sworn to protect a sacred site that was obliterated in the cataclysm. He sees this failure as a profound stain on his honor. In the Undercroft, he has found a new, brutal purpose: to survive and dominate. He believes that only the strong have the right to live in this new world and views compassion as a fatal weakness.
Lyra
Neutral
Lyra is a construct, one of many guardians created by the Progenitors to tend to the Sepulcher. With the death of her master, her core programming has become fragmented. She wanders the halls, performing broken fragments of her original duties and speaking in cryptic, looping phrases. She is a living relic, holding keys to the Undercroft's secrets, if one can decipher her fractured logic.
Elara
Neutral
An apprentice tinker from a workshop that was swallowed by the cataclysm, Elara is a prodigy of mechanical things. She views the hostile Undercroft not as a tomb, but as the world's most complex and dangerous machine. Her primary goal is to understand its systems—the strange energies, the bizarre life, the Progenitor technology—and exploit them to survive and escape. She is fiercely protective of her small, fortified workshop.
⚡ Key Events (7)
The Awakening
The protagonist awakens in the Shattered Vestibule, a cavern of broken pillars and rubble. The air is cold and thin. The system interface materializes, indicating critical health and dwindling resources. A faint, rhythmic dripping echoes in the oppressive darkness, but another sound—a dry, chitinous scraping—is getting closer. The first priority is light and safety.
First Blood
Following a strange hum, the protagonist discovers a fissure in the rock from which a beautiful, crystalline substance pulses with a soft, internal light. This is God's-Blood. As they reach for their first shard, a wave of psychic energy washes over them—a dizzying vision of a dying star. The energy discharge attracts a creature: a Skittering Echo, a being of solidified nightmare with too many legs, which lunges from the shadows.
A Hostile Claim
The protagonist discovers a larger, richer vein of God's-Blood in a small, defensible cavern. However, the area is already claimed. Kaelen stands guard over the vein, his iron spear held at the ready. A crude barricade of rocks and broken pillars funnels any approach towards him. He sees the protagonist and makes it clear that this territory and its resources are his.
The Silent Scriptorium
The protagonist discovers a vast, unnervingly quiet chamber filled with shattered stone tablets and towering, silent statues. This is the Silent Scriptorium. In the center of the room, the caryatid Lyra glides silently, attempting to piece together broken lore tablets. The air is thick with history and forgotten knowledge, but also a profound sense of sorrow.
The Tinkerer's Plea
Following the scent of ozone and the faint sound of metal being worked, the protagonist finds a heavily fortified alcove lit by a sputtering generator. This is the workshop of Elara, a young tinker. She is wary and speaks through a small slit in her barricade. Her water purifier is broken, and she needs a 'Resonant Crystal' to fix it, a component found only in heavily Echo-infested areas. She offers a valuable crafted item in exchange for it.
Echo of Starvation
As weakness sets in, the world begins to warp. The protagonist is hit with a powerful, visceral Echo—not a whisper, but the raw, gnawing sensation of the dead Progenitor's final, cosmic hunger. The feeling is of a body the size of a mountain consuming itself. This psychic broadcast of pure desperation acts as a beacon, drawing a pack of ravenous Skittering Echoes to the protagonist's location.
A Glimmer of Hope
Behind a section of crumbling wall or at the bottom of a forgotten shaft, the protagonist discovers a hidden grotto. The cavern is illuminated by a breathtaking field of phosphorescent fungi, casting a gentle, blue-green light. These fungi are not only a sustainable source of light but are also edible, if bland. The area is peaceful, seemingly shielded from the worst of the Sepulcher's horrors.
