The introduction and setting of the world, including its history.
The world was once Everwood, a vibrant land woven from countless fairy tales. But the 'Whispering Blight' arrived—a magical plague that soured magic, rotted the land, and twisted living things into monstrous parodies of their former selves. The Great Trees, sources of the world's magic, withered and died. Before the end, ancient sanctuaries known as Root Cellars were sealed, intended to preserve life. Now, centuries later, they are little more than forgotten tombs, sprawling networks of roots and caverns filled with danger. The protagonist is one of the few survivors, or perhaps a new arrival, trapped within this dark, subterranean ecosystem.

Protagonist
An artisan's apprentice from a small village, Elara was learning to be a woodcarver before the world fell apart. She possesses a practical mind and nimble fingers, ideal for crafting and tinkering, but lacks any formal combat training. She is driven by a desperate, perhaps naive, hope of finding a way back to the sunlit world.
Kaelen

A former Glimmer-Warden, one of the ancient caretakers of the Great Trees. Kaelen has survived in the Root Cellar for decades, long enough to see all his companions fall. He is a master survivalist but has become deeply embittered and trusts no one. He hoards resources and knowledge, seeing other survivors as either competition or a liability.
Pip

A sentient being born of the Root Cellar's unique ecosystem. Pip is a child of the deep earth, naive and curious about the world. The Huntsman

The Awakening
The protagonist awakens in the cold, oppressive dark of the Heartwood Chamber. They are alone, hungry, and have only the clothes on their back. The discovery of the 'Storybook Shard' activates their system interface, revealing their fragile state. A noise in the dark heralds the first threat: a small, but vicious, Blighted creature. This is a fight for immediate survival.
A Glimmer in the Dark
Following a path deeper into the Cellar, the protagonist stumbles into a crude, but well-defended, encampment. They are immediately confronted by Kaelen, the gnome survivalist, who holds them at spearpoint. He is suspicious and territorial, demanding to know who they are and what they want. This is the first encounter with another intelligent survivor.
The Whispering Well
In a hidden grotto, a well filled with shimmering, faintly glowing water is discovered. The water seems to whisper, promising knowledge or power. Faint, corrupted faces swirl just beneath the surface. This is a source of old magic, but it is clearly tainted by the Blight. Drinking from it could grant a boon—a vision, a new skill, a surge of Wonder—or inflict a terrible curse.
The First Hunt
While exploring a new passage, the protagonist gets the unnerving sensation of being watched. They discover fresh tracks, clearly not from any beast encountered before. A moment later, a heavy axe whistles through the air, embedding itself in a root just inches away. A tall, skull-helmed figure emerges from the shadows. The Huntsman has found new prey.
Pip's Garden
The protagonist discovers a secluded, breathtaking cavern. Giant, bioluminescent mushrooms pulse with soft light, illuminating a space that feels strangely peaceful. Hiding among the fungal stalks is Pip, a small, shy creature of mycelium, who seems drawn to the faint light of the protagonist's Wonder.
The Gilded Cage
In a collapsed cavern filled with debris, the protagonist finds the rusted, broken remains of a magnificent gilded cage, large enough to have held a person. Inside, nestled amongst the debris, is the delicate skeleton of a large songbird. Clutched in its bones is a single, perfectly preserved golden feather.
The Crooked Mile
Following a cryptic clue from a nursery rhyme, the protagonist finds a strange intersection of tunnels. One path seems to defy logic, twisting back on itself in a way that makes the eyes water and the head spin. This is the 'crooked mile' from the rhyme.
