📖 Story Backstory
The introduction and setting of the world, including its history.
The year is 2247. The 'Genesis Protocol'—a global quantum-soul network—enforces controlled reincarnation. Upon death, consciousness is uploaded and reinstantiated into a new vat-grown body at a Rebirth Facility, funded by Rebirth Credits purchased from the corporate syndicate, the Genesis Council. Society is stratified by Credit wealth: the immortal elite (Infinite Credits) versus the struggling masses living on borrowed lives. Classes are not just jobs but legally recognized neuro-aptitude profiles granting access to advanced cyberware and skills. Rumors whisper of 'Echoes'—glitches in the system where memories from past lives bleed through, and of a shadowy resistance, the 'Null Sect', who seek to shatter the Protocol entirely.
👥 Characters (4)
Characters in this story. You will choose who to play as when you start.
Kai
Protagonist
The protagonist. A freelance Infiltrator with a murky past-life history. Kai takes high-risk data theft jobs to afford more Rebirth Credits, driven by a deep-seated fear of final deletion and fragmented memories of a life that ended in betrayal within OmniCorp's R&D division.
Silas
Neutral
A veteran fixer and information broker who operates out of 'The Rusty Circuit', a bar in the undercity. He holds the debts of many newly Reborn, including Kai. Silas trades in secrets, favors, and black-market cyberware, and has survived more iterations than most due to ruthless pragmatism.
Lyra
Neutral
A rising star within the Genesis Council's Compliance Bureau. Officially, she audits Rebirth Facility anomalies. Unofficially, she hunts 'Echo-tainted' individuals and Null Sect sympathizers. She is dogmatic, brilliant, and haunted by perfect, repeating Echoes of a single, serene memory she cannot place.
Jax
Neutral
A 'Echo-ridden' scavenger and information trader who lives in the deepest, most unstable parts of the undercity's data-dumps. Jax suffers from constant, uncontrolled Echoes that have fragmented his sense of self, but this also gives him uncanny, if chaotic, insights into the Protocol's glitches. He trades in 'junk data'—corrupted memory fragments that sometimes contain valuable secrets.
⚡ Key Events (8)
A Fresh Start in the Rain
Kai awakens in the Reclamation Bay, disoriented and haunted by the Echo of his last death. The automated system assigns him his Class and dwindling Credit balance. Stepping out into the neon-drenched alley, he receives Silas's job offer via encrypted datastream. The player must decide: accept the risky heist to pay the debt, or refuse and seek a slower, more dangerous path to answers in the undercity.
Breaching the Spire
If the job was accepted, Kai must infiltrate OmniCorp's mid-level data spire. The mission involves bypassing bio-locked doors, avoiding patrol drones, and navigating a server farm where digital ghosts of deleted employees sometimes manifest as Echoes. The core objective is to reach the secure vault holding the black-market memory core. Complications arise when Lyra's audit team arrives early, locking down sections of the spire.
Echoes in the Static
After the heist (successful or not), Kai experiences a powerful, sustained Echo. He relives a memory not his own: a council chamber where the founders of the Genesis Protocol argue about a 'soul-carryover limit' and a 'Lazarus Contingency'. The memory ends with a face—someone who looks like Lyra. Silas reveals the memory core points to a hidden facility, 'The Archive', where original soul-backups are stored. Lyra, experiencing a synchronized Echo, begins to doubt her mission.
The Scrapyard Prophet
Following leads from Silas or Lyra, Kai descends into the 'Gutters', a sprawling junkyard of decommissioned Rebirth tech and data-servers. He finds Jax amidst the wreckage, who is being pursued by Null Sect enforcers who wish to 'purify' his corrupted data. Kai must decide: help Jax escape, turn him over to the Null Sect for a reward, or try to negotiate.
Council's Gaze
Lyra's unauthorized investigation and Kai's activities trigger an internal review. A high-ranking Genesis Council Overseer, Vector, summons Lyra for a 'debriefing'. Simultaneously, Kai finds his Credit account frozen and his identity flagged, trapping him in the district. The Council's enforcement drones begin saturation patrols.
Ghost in the Machine
While accessing a heavily encrypted data-node (perhaps in OmniCorp or The Gutters), Kai experiences a powerful, coherent Echo that manifests as a persistent digital ghost—a remnant of his past self, Dr. Aris Thorne. The ghost can offer guidance, unlock doors, or provide skill flashes, but it is a massive anomaly that draws immediate attention from both the Council and the Null Sect.
The Rusty Circuit's Last Call
Silas's bar is raided by Council Enforcers. Evidence planted by a rival or uncovered by Lyra's audit implicates him in Null Sect dealings. The player arrives in the aftermath or during the raid. Silas is cornered, his life-credit balance exposed as dangerously low. He offers Kai his entire network and a final, priceless piece of intel on Project Lazarus in exchange for a diversion or a lethal favor.
Convergence Point
All paths lead to the location of The Archive's access point—a disguised maintenance shaft beneath a decommissioned orbital elevator. Kai, possibly with Lyra or Jax in tow, arrives to find it already breached. Inside, they discover not a server farm, but a vast, silent chamber containing thousands of dormant, original soul-capsules... and evidence that the 'Lazarus Contingency' involves periodic, mandatory soul-wipes of the general population to prevent systemic overload.
