📖 Story Backstory
The introduction and setting of the world, including its history.
Aethelgard is a realm where every being is reincarnated, retaining fragmented memories of past lives—these are called Echoes. Society is structured around Classes, inherited or chosen at each rebirth, which determine one's role. The world itself manifests RPG mechanics: health bars appear as faint auras, damage numbers flicker in the air, and quests are literal contracts with the world's will. The 'Cycle' is maintained by the Weave, an ancient magic. But now, the Cycle is fraying. Souls are being born as 'Blanks' with no past memories, and ancient monsters from forgotten lifetimes are reappearing. The capital, Luminspire, is a city built atop countless previous civilizations. Key locations include the Echoing Woods (where past-life memories are strongest), the Shattered Peaks (home to reclusive monastic orders), and the Silent Sea (a body of water that erases memories).
👥 Characters (4)
Characters in this story. You will choose who to play as when you start.
Kaelen
Neutral
Kaelen is a Cycle Archivist, a soul who has chosen the same class—Seeker—for dozens of lifetimes. He remembers more than almost any other being, but this has made him detached and melancholic. He oversees the Chamber of Awakening, guiding new Echoes. His motivation is to preserve the integrity of the Cycle, which he believes is breaking due to an external corruption. He hides a secret: in one of his past lives, he was responsible for a ritual that may have started the fraying.
Lyra
Neutral
Lyra is a Vanguard, a Warrior-class Echo who believes the Cycle's problems require direct action, not study. She is a 'Memory Hunter', actively seeking out places of powerful past-life resonance to battle the monsters that spawn there and harvest their 'Echo Cores'. She is brash, courageous, and deeply flawed—her obsession with gaining power from past lives is making her current life unstable. She secretly fears becoming a monster herself.
Elara
Neutral
Elara is a Weave-Tender, a rare and ancient class dedicated to maintaining the fabric of the Cycle itself. She is a living archive of the Weave's patterns and a mediator between the living and the echoes of the dead. Unlike Kaelen, who studies the Cycle, Elara feels its pain directly. She is compassionate but distant, her perspective shaped by witnessing countless souls pass through the Weave. Her secret is that she believes the solution to the fraying Cycle lies not in preservation, but in a controlled 'unraveling' and reweaving—a heresy that would terrify the Archivists.
Borin
Neutral
Borin is a Soul-Smith, a Utility class focused on crafting items that interact with the Cycle. He runs 'Borin's Echo-Forged' in the artisans' quarter of Luminspire. He doesn't care about grand philosophies or hunting memories; he believes in good, honest work. He crafts tools that help Echoes navigate their lives: potions that clarify memories, charms that ward off psychic echoes, and weapons that resonate with specific past lives. He is a font of practical wisdom and a potential source of powerful gear, but his services require rare materials and Echo Points.
⚡ Key Events (8)
Awakening in the Chamber
The protagonist, a new soul called an Echo, awakens in the ancient Chamber of Awakening. The Archivist Kaelen explains the basics of the Cycle, reincarnation, and the RPG-like nature of the world. He presents the three starting Class choices: Vanguard (Warrior), Arcanist (Mage), or Seeker (Support/Knowledge). The player must choose their class, which will set their initial stats and skill affinities. After the choice, the chamber door opens, revealing a corridor leading to the surface world of Luminspire.
The Hunter in the Woods
Upon exiting into the Echoing Woods at the city's edge, the protagonist encounters Lyra in a fierce battle with a semi-transparent 'Memory Phantom'—a monster formed from corrupted past-life echoes. Lyra defeats it but is wounded. She sizes up the new Echo, offering a crude alternative to Kaelen's philosophy: 'Power isn't remembered, it's taken.' She presents a choice: help her harvest the Phantom's Echo Core for a quick stat boost (risking memory corruption) or continue on the safer path to Luminspire.
The First Blank in Luminspire
In the bustling, layered city of Luminspire, the protagonist witnesses a commotion. A child has just Awakened as a 'Blank'—a soul with no past-life memories at all, a phenomenon that is becoming frighteningly common. The child is confused and terrified, unable to choose a class. City guards and a concerned crowd debate what to do. Kaelen arrives, his face grim. He quietly tasks the protagonist with investigating the site of the child's awakening for 'residue' of whatever is causing the Blanks.
A Smith's Commission
In Luminspire, the protagonist hears of Borin the Soul-Smith's reputation. Visiting his forge, they find him frustrated—a client's 'Memory-Lens' has shattered, and he lacks a key ingredient to repair it: 'Weepstone' from the cliffs overlooking the Silent Sea. He offers a commission: retrieve a chunk of Weepstone, and he will craft the protagonist a basic class-appropriate item in return, or teach them the Echo-Infusion skill.
The Sobbing Cliffs
At the Weepstone cliffs by the Silent Sea, the protagonist finds more than just mineral deposits. The area is haunted by 'Lamentors', echoes so saturated with grief from the sea that they have become passive environmental hazards, draining the will of those who come near. Harvesting the Weepstone requires navigating these sorrowful fields and potentially calming or avoiding the Lamentors.
The Weave-Spire's Summons
As the protagonist's Cycle Attunement grows, they experience a vivid dream—a melody of silver threads pulling them toward a distant spire by the sea. Awakening, they find a single, real silver thread coiled on their pillow. Following its pull leads to the Weave-Spire and its keeper, Elara. She greets them not as a new soul, but as an 'unexpected harmonic' in the Great Song, and asks for their help in mending a local 'snarl' in the Weave.
Council of Echoes
After the protagonist has gained some renown, Kaelen summons them to the Archives. They arrive to find a tense meeting already in progress: Kaelen, Lyra, and Elara are in a three-way argument about how to address the Blank crisis. Each presents their case to the protagonist, effectively asking them to choose which faction to support for a major upcoming endeavour: an expedition into the heart of the Shattered Peaks, where the source of the 'foreign' magic residue is suspected to lie.
The Shattered Peak's Heart
The expedition to the Shattered Peaks reaches its goal: a cavern where the Cycle's fabric is thin, and a pulsating, alien crystal—the source of the corruption—is embedded in the rock. The environment is a chaotic mix of overlapping past-life landscapes. The chosen ally's plan is put into action, but complications arise, forcing the protagonist to make a critical, immediate choice that will affect the fate of the region and their relationships.
