📖 Story Backstory
The introduction and setting of the world, including its history.
The world of 'Echo' functions on the 'System'—a pervasive, unexplained framework that assigns every person a Class and Stats at birth (or rather, at each Reincarnation). Society is stratified by Class tiers: from mundane 'Laborers' and 'Clerks' to rare 'Architects' or 'Revenants.' Upon death, a soul is Reincarnated after 24 hours into a new body with a random Class, often in a different city. Memories of past lives are not guaranteed but sometimes surface as 'Echoes.' The 'System' is considered immutable, a fact of reality. The city of New Meridian is a sprawling, rain-slicked metropolis where the glow of personal stat interfaces mixes with neon lights. A secret lore rule: Extremely rare 'Glitch' classes exist, individuals whose stats or abilities operate outside normal System parameters. They are often hunted or hide their nature.
👥 Characters (4)
Characters in this story. You will choose who to play as when you start.
Leo Vance
Protagonist
A private investigator in New Meridian. Officially, his Class is 'Investigator' (Tier 2). Unofficially, he is a 'Revenant'—a rare Glitch class that shouldn't exist. He carries Echoes from numerous past lives, including memories of violence and loss, which he medicates with cynicism and casework. He took the Finch case out of a gnawing suspicion that it touches on the System's flaws he secretly embodies.
Maya Finch
Neutral
The younger sister of the victim, Elias Finch. Her Class is 'System Technician' (Tier 1), a low-level class that allows minor diagnostics on public System nodes. She is wracked with grief and guilt, believing she missed signs before her brother's death. She is hiding a secret: Elias was experimenting with 'memory retention' between reincarnations, and she assisted him.
Inspector Kael
Neutral
A high-ranking officer in the System Compliance Bureau (SCB). His Class is 'Interrogator' (Tier 3). He is the one who officially closed the Elias Finch case as a 'System Anomaly.' He is polite, methodical, and utterly chilling. He knows more about Glitches than he lets on and views them as existential threats to order that must be 'corrected.'
Anya
Neutral
A Glitch whose Class reads as 'Error 404: Entity Not Found.' She has existed outside the standard Reincarnation cycle for an unknown length of time, hiding in the gaps of the System. She has formed a fragile network of other Glitches and knows the true history of the System's flaws. She is both a guide and a warning.
⚡ Key Events (7)
The Client in the Rain
Maya Finch arrives at Leo's office, soaked and shaking. She lays out the facts of her brother's death: found alone, no signs of struggle, Health stat zeroed out. She reveals the official SCB report and her own private data-slate, which shows a bizarre, fleeting spike in 'Unknown Energy Signature' in Elias's apartment logs just before death—data the SCB report omitted. She begs Leo to investigate, offering her technical skills. Leo must decide how deeply to engage: accept her as a full partner, keep her at arm's length as just a client, or turn her away, fearing SCB attention.
The Ghost in the Machine
Investigating Elias's sealed apartment, Leo uses his 'Scene Analysis' skill. The room is sterile, but an 'Echo Flash' hits him—a memory not his own: a figure shrouded in static, reaching for Elias. Maya uses 'System Diagnostic' on the apartment's local node, uncovering corrupted data suggesting a forced, localized 'System Override.' They also find Elias's hidden research: notes on 'Soul Anchoring' to preserve memory across reincarnations. Their investigation is interrupted by a visit from Inspector Kael, who politely warns them off.
A Lead in the Bazaar
Following a clue from Elias's data, Leo and Maya head to the Neon Bazaar to find a black-market info-broker known as 'The Curator.' The broker claims to have seen the 'Unknown Energy Signature' before, linking it to a missing 'Architect'-class programmer named Silas. The exchange is tense, and the broker demands a high price in Credits or a favor. As they leave, they spot SCB agents moving through the crowd.
The Architect's Ghost
Tracking Silas leads to his last known location: a derelict server farm in the Foundry district. The place is a maze of dead terminals and flickering lights. Using System Diagnostic, Maya finds a corrupted personal log: Silas was trying to 'debug' the System itself and believed he found a backdoor. A powerful, hostile Echo—Silas's final moments of terror—manifests, forcing Leo to confront it or flee.
Kael's Invitation
Inspector Kael summons Leo to the SCB Headquarters for a 'debriefing.' In a stark interrogation room, Kael offers a deal: drop the Finch case, and in return, the SCB will provide Leo with classified information about other 'Revenant' class individuals—potential kin. He implies he knows what Leo is. He also subtly threatens Maya's safety.
Garden of Memories
Pursuing Silas's clues about 'backdoors' leads to the Echo Gardens. Here, the ambient psychic energy is overwhelming. Leo experiences a cascade of Echoes, not just from Silas, but from his own past lives, revealing a pattern: each time he was an Enforcer, he was involved in covering up similar 'anomalies.' He finds a physical access point—a weathered data-monolith—hidden among the flora.
The Unshackled
Activating the monolith in the Gardens opens a connection to a hidden virtual space—a sanctuary for Glitches. Here, Leo and Maya meet their first ally who fully understands their plight: a woman named Anya, whose class reads as 'Error 404.' She reveals the murder weapon is a 'System Scalpel,' a tool that can permanently delete a soul from the Reincarnation cycle. The sanctuary is not safe for long; Kael's forces have traced the signal.
