📖 Story Backstory
The introduction and setting of the world, including its history.
The world of Aethel is a gentle, pastoral realm where civilization is measured in villages and towns, not empires. Centuries ago, the Goddess of New Beginnings established the system of Classes and Stats to bring order and purpose to mortal lives. It is a world built for living, not conquering. The village of Meadow's Rest is nestled in a fertile valley, known for its sweet apples, sturdy lumber, and the calming waters of the Restful Stream. Life follows the seasons. While the Class system provides structure, it can also feel like a cage for those who dream beyond their assigned role. Reincarnation is a whispered legend, a blessing (or a curiosity) from the Goddess, granting a soul a fresh start with the faint, haunting echoes of who they once were.

Characters in this story. You will choose who to play as when you start.
Arden
Protagonist
The protagonist. A reincarnated soul given a new body and life in Meadow's Rest. Has no memory of his past name or life, only a deep-seated feeling of having lived before and a quiet determination to make this life count. He is kind, observant, and slightly melancholic, often pausing to watch the sunset or listen to the wind in the trees.
Elara
Neutral
The village Herbalist's apprentice, bursting with curiosity and a rebellious streak. Elara chafes against the quiet expectations of village life and dreams of exploring the Whispering Woods to catalog every plant. She is fiercely loyal, impulsive, and possesses a deep, intuitive connection to growing things.
Borin
Neutral
The village Woodworker and de facto leader. A man of few words but immense integrity. Borin's Class is 'Artisan,' and he embodies it, believing that true worth comes from creating something lasting with your own hands. He is wary of change and outsiders, but his loyalty, once earned, is unshakable.
Kaelen
Neutral
The itinerant Merchant and occasional Messenger who visits Meadow's Rest every few weeks. Kaelen is the village's primary link to the wider world, bringing news, rare goods, and a whiff of distant places. He is charming, observant, and possesses a trader's knack for reading people. His true Class is 'Merchant,' but he carries secrets and a personal quest he shares with no one.
⚡ Key Events (8)
A New Dawn in Meadow's Rest
Arden wakes in a strange room, greeted by Old Man Hemlock and the revelation of his reincarnation. After a simple breakfast, Hemlock suggests Arden start getting his bearings. The player can choose to: 1) Stay and help Hemlock with chores around the small farm, learning basic Farming skills and getting a feel for the rhythm of the day. 2) Follow a path into the village proper, where they'll encounter the bustling central square, the general store, and hear gossip about the newcomer. 3) Wander towards the sound of the Restful Stream, a place of quiet reflection where Arden might experience his first 'Echo'—a fleeting memory of water from another life.
The Herbalist's Invitation
A few days later, Elara seeks out Arden, bursting with excitement. She's found a rare 'Moonpetal' flower deep in the safer parts of the Whispering Woods, but needs help to safely collect it before it wilts at sundown. She offers to teach him basic Plant Identification in return. This short expedition introduces the local flora, the concept of gathering resources, and the potential dangers of the woods (twisted roots, sudden weather changes, not monsters). Success depends on careful observation and following Elara's instructions. During the trip, Arden may experience another Echo related to nature.
The Merchant's Arrival
Kaelen's wagon rolls into Meadow's Rest, causing a small stir. He sets up a temporary stall in the square. Arden can choose to browse his wares (some useful, some merely curious), engage him in conversation for news of the outside world, or offer to help unload his wagon for a small coin or a favor. Kaelen will subtly probe Arden about his origins.
Borin's Test
Borin approaches Arden with a practical problem: a fence on the north pasture is damaged. He needs sturdy replacement posts cut and treated. He offers to teach Arden the basics of wood selection and simple tool use if Arden will help with the labor. This is a multi-day task involving foraging in the wooded hills, hauling lumber, and careful preparation.
Whispers in the Woods
Elara hears a rumor from Kaelen about a patch of 'Ghost-Cap' mushrooms appearing in a secluded part of the Whispering Woods. They are valuable to alchemists in the city but are tricky to find and identify correctly. She convinces Arden to join a dawn forage. The search is peaceful but eerie, with mist clinging to the hollows. Finding the mushrooms requires patience and a sharp eye.
The Spring Market
A seasonal event where villagers set up stalls to sell surplus goods. Arden can participate if he has produced anything (vegetables, simple carvings, gathered herbs). It's a major social event, a chance to meet everyone, and a test of his integration. Success means profits and reputation; failure means social awkwardness and unsold goods.
Kaelen's Proposition
After the market, Kaelen seeks Arden out privately. He has a proposition: a sealed letter needs to be delivered to the next town, Willow's Crossing, a two-day walk away. Kaelen can't go himself due to another commitment. He offers generous payment, but the journey is not without minor risks—unpredictable weather, the chance of getting lost. He also hints the recipient might have 'interesting' knowledge.
An Echo of Craft
While attempting a simple woodworking task under Borin's watchful eye, Arden's hands move with an uncanny, practiced grace he doesn't remember learning. He produces a joint or a carving detail of surprising quality. Borin falls silent, studying him intently. 'That... wasn't beginner's luck,' he grumbles. This moment forces Arden to confront the tangible impact of his past life on his present one.
