📖 Story Backstory
The introduction and setting of the world, including its history.
Centuries after the Collapse, the ReGenesis Protocol was activated—a global AI system that resurrects every human upon death, resetting them with randomized classes and stats. The world is now a perpetual RPG: experience points are gained through exploration and conflict, levels are earned, and death is temporary (though memories degrade with each respawn). The landscape is a patchwork of ruined megacities, mutated biomes, and 'Dungeon Zones'—areas where the Protocol's reality is thin, allowing glitches and anomalies. The ruling force is the Curators, enigmatic beings who maintain the system from the Central Spire. But rumors speak of 'Nulls'—entities who have escaped the cycle entirely, and of the 'Architect,' the original creator of the Protocol, who may hold the key to breaking the game. Unique Lore Rule: 'The Echo Rule'—significant actions or emotions from past lives can manifest as environmental echoes or temporary stat buffs/debuffs in corresponding locations.
👥 Characters (4)
Characters in this story. You will choose who to play as when you start.
Kael
Protagonist
The protagonist. Kael has been through more respawn cycles than most, leaving him with severe memory fragmentation but also an intuitive understanding of the system's flaws. He is driven by a deep, nagging sense that his original purpose—from his first life—is tied to the Architect. He is neither hero nor villain; he is a seeker of truth in a world designed to obfuscate it.
Lyra
Neutral
A self-proclaimed 'Null Hunter' who claims to have stabilized her memory across cycles. She works as a freelance agent, tracking down 'Null' entities and system anomalies for unknown clients. Lyra is charismatic and enigmatic, offering help and information but always at a price. She knows more about the system's underbelly than she lets on.
Griggs
Neutral
A veteran Scavenger-Lord who operates out of the Rust Bazaar, a trading hub built into a crashed freighter. Griggs has embraced the RPG system wholeheartedly, seeing it as a challenging but fair existence. He is boisterous, loyal to his crew, and runs a lucrative business trading Class Shards and rare components. He distrusts 'system-philosophers' like Kael, believing in tangible loot over abstract truths.
Orion
Neutral
A Curator—one of the enigmatic beings who maintain the ReGenesis Protocol from the Central Spire. Orion is tasked with monitoring system stability and eliminating anomalies. It is not malicious, but operates on pure, cold logic: the Protocol must be preserved at all costs to prevent total existential collapse. It views 'Nulls' and memory-stable entities like Lyra as system errors to be corrected.
⚡ Key Events (8)
Echoes in the Chamber
Kael awakens in the derelict Awakening Chamber. Exploring the immediate area reveals the facility's decay, a few basic supplies, and a malfunctioning terminal that displays a corrupted log entry: '...Protocol stability at 4%. Architect's last known vector: Sector 7-Alpha...' A sudden, painful memory echo floods Kael's mind—a vision of a woman in a lab coat (the Architect?) deactivating a core. The echo leaves a temporary 'Memory Resonance' buff. The event ends as Kael must choose his initial path: venture into the hazardous Violet Wastes outside, or delve deeper into the unstable facility to potentially find better gear and clues.
The Wastes' Whisper
After choosing a path from the Awakening Chamber, Kael ventures into the Violet Wastes. A sudden sandstorm forces him to take shelter in the shell of a broken comms tower. Inside, a functioning but ancient terminal activates, playing a looped distress call from the Collapse era. The voice is the Architect's, pleading for someone to 'deactivate the primary moral constraint.' The echo is strong, granting a temporary +5 to Memory Integrity. However, the transmission also acts as a beacon, attracting a pack of hostile Waste Stalkers.
Junk-Lord's Gambit
At the Rust Bazaar, Griggs offers Kael a lucrative but dangerous job: retrieve a 'Prime Class Shard' from a Glitch Dungeon that recently stabilized. He provides a Dungeon Key and a salvage beacon. The dungeon, 'Fractal Core,' is unstable. Inside, Kael must navigate looping corridors and avoid 'memory phantoms' that drain Memory Integrity. The shard is guarded by a corrupted defense program—a boss fight.
Lyra's Proposition
Lyra intercepts Kael after the dungeon job. She reveals she was monitoring him and believes the Prime Shard is a 'tracking device' planted by the Curators. She offers a deal: help her raid a Curator data-outpost to steal a 'Memory Anchor Schematic,' and she will help him remove the shard's tracking and unlock its true potential. She warns that Orion is now actively hunting them.
Core Corruption
While exploring the deeper levels of the derelict Awakening Chamber facility (if that initial path was chosen), Kael finds the dormant ReGenesis Core. It is corrupted, pulsing with black and green static. Interacting with it triggers a massive memory echo—a vision of the Architect being dragged away by faceless guards as she screams about a 'cascade failure.' The core attempts to assimilate Kael, initiating a skill-based challenge to resist its pull using Interface and Memory Integrity stats.
Orion's Intervention
Orion manifests suddenly in the zone where Kael is located, whether in the Wastes, Bazaar outskirts, or a dungeon. It announces a 'system audit' and demands Kael submit to a 'memory scan.' Refusal leads to combat. Orion is a high-level opponent that cannot be defeated through normal means—the goal is to survive long enough for Lyra to hack a local terminal and force a temporary system reboot, causing Orion to destabilize and retreat.
The Null's Price
If Kael allied with Lyra, this event triggers at the stolen data-outpost. Lyra successfully extracts the Memory Anchor Schematic, but the process requires a sacrifice: a large amount of Kael's current XP or a permanent reduction in his Max Health to power the device. Lyra is conflicted but determined. Kael must choose to pay the price, refuse (causing Lyra to attempt it alone and possibly become a mindless Null), or suggest an alternative (like using the Corrupted Core Fragment as a power source, which has unknown risks).
Griggs's Last Stand
A missable event. If Kael consistently helped Griggs and built high rapport, Griggs's settlement is attacked by a Curator purge squad led by a lesser Curator. Griggs sends a desperate distress call. If Kael responds in time, he can help defend the Rust Bazaar. The battle is chaotic, with Griggs fighting heroically with his hydraulic fist. Success saves the Bazaar and earns Griggs's undying loyalty, unlocking his personal transport for fast travel. Failure results in the Bazaar being destroyed and Griggs being 'reset' into a mindless respawn drone.
