📖 Story Backstory

One hundred years ago, the 'System'—a reality-altering framework of unknown origin—merged with Earth. Overnight, the laws of physics were overwritten with RPG rules. Humanity gained Status Panels, Levels, and the potential for Classes. Simultaneously, monstrous flora and fauna spawned across the globe, with dense jungles, now called the 'Verdant Canopy,' becoming the most dangerous and resource-rich zones. Cities were rebuilt as fortified bastions. Society reorganized around the Class system, with annual Awakening Ceremonies for youths. The city of Canopy Haven, built into and atop a gargantuan ancient tree, is a hub for adventurers delving into the jungle for loot, experience, and to push back the ever-encroaching monster hordes. Rumors speak of 'System Glitches,' areas where reality stutters, and of a deeper truth behind the Merge waiting to be uncovered in the jungle's heart.

The Talent Reveal

First Steps in the Fringe
After choosing a Class and receiving basic gear, Kaelen is directed to the Verdant Fringe for their initial field assessment—a standard survival trial for all new awakeneds. The goal is simple: survive for a few hours, gather some resources, and defeat at least one monster. Lyra might be there 'coincidentally,' offering unsolicited advice or a challenge.
The Proving Grounds
After surviving the Fringe, Kaelen is invited (or required) to participate in the Proving Grounds—a controlled dungeon simulation beneath Canopy Haven used to evaluate new awakeneds' combat aptitude and teamwork. Here, they face simulated monsters and environmental challenges while being observed by Proctors and guild scouts. Rourke oversees the trial, offering terse commentary. Lyra might be participating as well, turning it into a competition.
Glimmerroot Infestation
A distress call comes from the Verdant Fringe: a colony of aggressive Glimmerroot Sprites has overrun a resource-gathering outpost, trapping several gatherers. The city posts an emergency quest for low-level adventurers to clear the infestation. This is Kaelen's first real quest with stakes beyond personal survival.
The Silent Grove
While on a routine patrol, Kaelen stumbles upon a section of the jungle known as the Silent Grove—a place where all ambient System sounds (music, notification pings) fade to nothing. The flora is eerily still, and the monsters are replaced by 'Data Phantoms,' semi-corporeal entities born from System glitches. This is a minor Glitch Zone.
Guild Recruitment Drive
Major guilds of Canopy Haven, including the remnants of Rourke's old guild 'The Rootbreakers' and the prestigious 'Silvertrack Expeditionary Society' Lyra's family is part of, hold open recruitment trials. Kaelen can choose to participate, aiming to impress scouts and secure a guild sponsorship, which offers training, resources, and shared quests.
The Rootbreaker's Legacy
Rourke, if he has taken a mentor interest in Kaelen, reveals the true story of his guild's demise. He believes the Glitch Zone that killed his team was not random but a 'System Security Protocol' triggered by their discovery of a Pre-Merge data cache. He tasks Kaelen with a dangerous, off-the-books investigation: retrieve a specific data-fragment from the outskirts of that same Glitch Zone.
