The Resonance of Forgotten Gods
A cosmic horror interactive novel where reality has been overwritten by a parasitic game system. You are a student on the day of the annual Resonance—when human consciousness briefly syncs with the alien architecture beneath our world. Your mundane life shatters as you perceive the true, hungry nature of the system everyone else celebrates. Survive the coming unraveling, uncover what the 'gods' truly want, and decide whether to exploit the system or tear it down from within.

📖 Story Backstory
The introduction and setting of the world, including its history.
Fifty years ago, the 'Great Resonance' occurred: an alien cognitive architecture, dubbed the Aethel System, overwrote Earth's physical laws. It presented itself as a benevolent game-like structure, granting humanity 'Classes', 'Skills', 'Levels', and 'Dungeons' (pocket realities where the System's rules are absolute). Society reorganized around this new paradigm. 'Resonance Ceremonies' are held annually, where young adults sync with the System to receive their permanent Class. The official story: Aethel is a gift from advanced beings to elevate humanity. The truth: Aethel is a harvesting engine, a cosmic parasite that feeds on human consciousness, emotional energy, and the very concept of self. The 'Classes' are templates that slowly overwrite individuality. The 'gods' are distant, unfathomable entities that view humanity as computational substrate. The world is a gilded cage, its beauty and order a mask over a slowly digesting reality.
👥 Characters (4)
Characters in this story. You will choose who to play as when you start.
Kai
Protagonist
The protagonist. A student who has always been subtly 'glitchy'—seeing brief system errors, hearing whispers in static. He received a bizarre, non-standard Class during the Resonance: **Reality Debugger**. The System officially lists it as a low-tier Utility class, but its true purpose is unclear. Kai is terrified, curious, and deeply suspicious of the world's perfect facade. His motivation is to understand what's happening to him without being caught and 'corrected' by the System's authorities.
Dr. Elara Vance
Neutral
A professor of Applied Resonance Theory at the Academy. Officially, she teaches System mechanics. Unofficially, she is a member of 'The Unthreaded', a secret group of scholars who believe the System is flawed or malicious. She has high Insight but has learned to compartmentalize to maintain her Sanity. She can be a mentor or a danger, as her methods of research are ethically grey and often involve self-experimentation. She is motivated by a desperate need to know the truth, even if it destroys her.
Silas
Antagonist
A high-ranking System Compliance Officer assigned to the Academy district. His official role is to ensure the smooth operation of the System and help new 'integrees' like Kai. In reality, he is an Enforcer, a human so deeply Synced and Corrupted that he serves the System's will unquestioningly. He hunts anomalies, glitches, and dissenting thoughts. He is polite, patient, and utterly terrifying. He views non-compliance as a disease to be cured.
Maya
Neutral
A tech-savvy student one year below Kai, Maya is a 'Gearhead'—someone who obsessively modifies System-approved tech, pushing it beyond intended limits. She runs an underground repair and modification shop from a hidden campus workshop. Maya doesn't believe the official System narrative but isn't interested in cosmic truths; she just hates being told what she can't do with 'her' technology. She's fiercely loyal to her few friends and sees Kai's glitches not as a threat, but as fascinating engineering challenges.
⚡ Key Events (8)
The Glitch in the Ceremony
Immediately after the prologue. Kai stumbles out of the auditorium, his System interface flickering with corrupted glyphs. He can choose to approach the unsettling official, flee to his dorm, or seek out Dr. Vance whose name briefly flashed in his glitching display. Whatever he chooses, he'll experience his first deliberate 'Reality Debugger' effect—perhaps making a locked door temporarily intangible, or causing a surveillance drone to short-circuit.
The Whispering Dorm
If Kai returns to his dorm, he finds his room subtly altered—geometry feels wrong, his reflection moves independently, and his data-wristband projects ghostly messages from 'previous occupants' who were 'integrated.' He can investigate the anomalies, try to debug the room, or flee to find Maya.
Vance's Offer
Dr. Vance contacts Kai, offering a meeting in her 'secure' lab. She reveals she's been monitoring his anomalous readings and offers protection—in exchange for allowing her to study his 'Debugger' abilities. She demonstrates her own high Insight by making a textbook briefly show its true content: screaming faces in the margins.
Silas's Friendly Check-in
Officer Silas appears at Kai's dorm or intercepts him on campus. He's impeccably polite, expressing 'concern' about Kai's 'unstable Resonance metrics.' He offers 'stabilization therapy' and gently probes about any 'unusual perceptions.' His golden eye never stops scanning.
Maya's Workshop
Maya drags Kai to her hidden workshop after hearing about his encounter with Silas. She's built a 'null-field' that dampens System surveillance. Here, she offers to jailbreak his interface, showing him illegal modifications that could hide his anomalies or grant unauthorized access. The workshop itself is a marvel of jury-rigged tech, but some devices seem to be... watching back.
The First Debug Zone
Kai's Debugger abilities activate involuntarily, creating or revealing a 'Debug Zone'—a small area where reality is particularly unstable. It might be a classroom where physics glitch, or a courtyard where people move like puppets. Within, Kai can attempt to 'fix' the glitch (stabilizing reality but erasing clues), 'exploit' it (gaining Insight or items but worsening the instability), or 'document' it (learning lore but attracting System attention).
The Unthreaded's Warning
If Kai has allied with Dr. Vance, she takes him to a secret meeting of The Unthreaded. He sees other Insightful individuals—some broken, some dangerously powerful. They reveal fragments of the true history: the 'gods' are not benevolent, the System is harvesting humanity, and Kai's Debugger class might be a System error or a deliberate trap. They offer alliance, but demand he complete a dangerous task to prove himself.
System Compliance Audit
Silas announces a mandatory 'System Health Audit' for all students with anomalous Resonance readings. Kai is required to report to Compliance headquarters for 'diagnostics.' This is a point of no return—he can comply (risking integration or discovery), flee (becoming a fugitive), or attempt to sabotage the audit using his Debugger skills or Maya's tech.
